Kate Winslet Just Compared 'Mare of Easttown' to 'Titanic'
Kate Winslet’s latest project, HBO’s Mare of Easttown, is giving the actor major Titanic vibes. Not the program itself but rather the hype surrounding it. Winslet, 45, says the limited series’ popularity is reminiscent of what she experienced in 1997 when Titanic hit theaters.
Kate Winslet is a small-town detective on ‘Mare of Easttown’
For those who haven’t been obsessively watching every episode of Mare of Easttown since it premiered on April 18, 2021, Winslet plays Mare Sheehan, a detective who lives and works in the small Pennsylvania town where she grew up. While she’s trying to get answers in the disappearance of one of the town’s residents, another is found dead.
Soon Mare begins to question her friends, family, and everyone else in the tight knit community. She gets help from Detective Colin Zabel, as played by Evan Peters. Meanwhile, Mare’s navigating life after divorce and grappling with losing her son two years after his death.
Kate Winslet says the popularity of ‘Mare of Easttown’ is ‘like going back in time’ to ‘Titanic’
Mare of Easttown is a time machine of sorts for Winslet. 2021 feels a bit like 1997 when Titanic premiered and the world knew her for her role as Rose DeWitt Bukater, a young woman who falls in love with Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio).
During a May 2021 Zoom interview with Maureen Dowd of The New York Times, Winslet shared that the hype surrounding Mare of Easttown is remarkably similar.
“It’s like ‘Titanic’ again,” she said. “I’m on the side of buses again! It’s like going back in time 24 years where I’m walking down the street and people are nudging and pointing and whispering again.”
Winslet added that when she went on a bike ride in England, a woman approached her to discuss Mare of Easttown theories. On top of the conversation the show’s ignited among fans, it’s also become the subject of a Saturday Night Live sketch. SNL spoofed Winslet’s Mare of Easttown accent in May 2021 with a sketch called “Murdur Durdur.”
Is ‘Mare of Easttown’ Season 2 happening?
Given that Winslet is comparing Mare of Easttown with Titanic, one of the biggest blockbusters ever, it’s no wonder there’s already talk of more episodes. Will Mare of Easttown Season 2 actually happen? Right now, nothing is confirmed. The show’s a miniseries with only seven episodes. However, thanks to its popularity and positive reviews from critics, HBO may decide to move forward with Mare’s story. The show’s star is up for reprising her role.
“I would absolutely love to play Mare again,” Winslet told TVLine in May 2021 when asked about the possibility of a second season. “I miss her. I really do. It’s the strangest thing. I feel like I’m in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role … There’s something very addictive about Mare, because she’s so outrageous and lovable and brilliant and real, you know? I loved playing her.”
As for Craig Zobel, the director and executive producer of Mare of Easttown, he says Mare “is an amazing character, so I would be excited to see” more. Although he also shared that he likes “it as a miniseries.”
While Mare of Easttown’s future is uncertain, stream all seven episodes of the show on HBO Max.
