Love Island bosses ‘planning winter version filmed in South Africa after Christmas’ after viewing figures soar

After viewing figures have soared for the latest series of the ITV2 dating show, Love Island producers are reportedly planning a winter version to be filmed in South Africa after Christmas.

According to The Sun, the winter version of the show will follow the same format as the summer one.

It’s claimed the show will fill the gap in the TV schedule that has been left by Celebrity Big Brother.

Last year’s show Survival of the Fittest, which saw contestants compete in physical tests and was presented by Laura Whitmore, was axed after just one series.

A source told the publication: “After the flop of Survival of the Fittest producers want to keep the format simple and mop up the gaping hole Celebrity Big Brother left reality TV hungry audiences.

"Winter Love Island makes sense as fans adore the drama and love triangles and everyone wants to enjoy a bit of sun on screens in the cold winter months.

“It’s still in the very early stages and casting isn’t even close, but producers at ITV Studios and crew are definitely gearing up for it.”

The first episode of the new series was watched by a record 5.9million on ITV2, PC, tablet and mobile, up 16 per cent on last year.

Last night’s episode saw Tommy Fury pick Molly-Mae in a shock recoupling following days of flirting with new girl Maura.

Despite claiming his head had done a “560 degree turn” following the Irish model’s arrival, he stayed true to his ‘gut’ with his final decision.

During a tense recoupling, where the girls were stood in a line waiting for the boys’ verdict by the firepit, it was evident how nervous Molly-Mae was following days of uncertainty about her romance with Tommy.

During the 20 year old boxer’s turn, he said: "I want to couple up with this girl because ever since she walked into the villa she put a huge smile on my face the size of the villa.

Despite Tommy’s co-stars appearing to think he was referring to Maura, he continued: "Ever since I've got to know I've been intrigued to know more and more as the days have gone by.

"I'm just hoping we can get to know each other more and more as the days go on.

"There was an instant connection there, So the girl I want to couple up with is…Molly."
