Love Island star Liberty Poole's mum admits she was 'heartbroken' over the way her daughter was treated by fellow Islander Jake Cornish during their time in the villa.

Liberty and Jake coupled up together on day one but after a series of bumps in the road, Liberty decided to end their romance and the pair quit the villa this week – ahead of Monday night's finale.

Speaking from Mallorca, where this year’s series was filmed, Jo, 49, told the Mirror: “It was an emotional journey, and I’m grateful she’s with me.”

She added: "I think Jake has had a rough time and if Libby is saying he is a nice person, then I have to stick with that."

“But it was heartbreaking because she was looking for love and he was as well.

“I wanted it to be that true love – either a passionate love or the kind where it’s, ‘I care for you and want to make you feel safe.’ I didn’t see that from him towards my daughter and she definitely deserved that so made the right call.”

Liberty and Jake left the Love Islanders in tears on Friday night's episode when they announced they had decided to leave the show together.

Following their incredible "dream date" on a yacht in Majorca, the blonde beauty, 21, and water engineer, 24, returned to the main villa and asked their pals to gather around the fire pit.

Sitting all together, Liberty, who recently slept on the daybed with Kaz Kamwi, explained: "So yeah we went on this boat, it was our dream date and yeah we just like talked things through and stuff.

"We both just come to the conclusion that at this time we should go our separate ways. We're going to leave the villa."

"No you're not!" Chloe Burrows said, as Millie Court added: "Now? What the f**k?"

Liberty continued: "We just obviously don't want to be here and take up a place when I've seen you guys are all strong couples. That was us at one point but it's not us anymore."

Jake added: "We don't want to suck the life out of things, you know?" Before adding that they're just "not getting on".

Liberty went on to explain that their romance fell apart but the other Islanders' relationships has blossomed.

"We don't want to drain the life out of the villa with our situation, so we're just going to pack and go," she said.

Their pals couldn't help but break down into tears after the announcement as they tearfully hugged.
