The animated style of the latest series on Disney+ has given Marvel the chance to show comic book fans things that have never been seen on screen before. With the first episode of What If…? proving a major hit for Disney, producer Kevin Feige is apparently already starting to think about what comes next.

Marvel Studios have already confirmed that a second season of What If…? is in the works ahead of its premiere on Wednesday.

Now, Black Widow executive producer Brad Winderbaum claims the universe is already planning to expand on its first foray into animation.

He recently told Variety that the studio has several cartoon projects lined up for the future.

Their report claimed Marvel was inspired by the creative freedom allowed by the medium, admitting that recreating certain sequences in What If…? would only only be possible through animation.

Winderbaum said: “We realized that there’s a lot of cool avenues you can explore with animation.

“Any project that we create is going to be something that needs to be animated in order for the story to be told.”

The producer also suggested each series would be completely unique, and not just spun off from Marvel’s latest blockbuster hits.

He continued: “There’s very little desire to take a piece of IP that’s popular because we’re coming out with a movie and just make an animated show about it.”

“We’re not going to do that,” Winderbaum then assured Marvel fans.

In addition to another set of What If…? adventures, Marvel are also developing I Am Groot, a series of short films based on the Guardians of the Galaxy character voiced by Vin Diesel.

It has also been confirmed that Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter will be appearing in every subsequent season of the new animated series.

For What If…?, director Bryan Andrews collaborated with independent animated studios Flying Bark Productions, Squeeze Animation Studios and Blue Spirit to develop the show’s unique style.

However, Winderbaum has also suggested the comic book studio is open to working with Disney’s in-house animation arm or even Pixar at some point in the future.

He said: “It’s something that we’d be open to under the right circumstances. It all depends on the project.”

The producer has also clarified the furore surrounding Drax star Dave Bautista’s claim that he was never asked to appear in the series.

Although the likes of Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson haven’t returned, Winderbaum maintained that all past and present Marvel stars were asked in some form.

He recalled: “It’s my understanding that everybody was asked in some way, shape or form, either through their agents or directly.

“I don’t know really what happened behind the scenes there, but certainly, we would have loved for him to be in the show. So there’s probably some miscommunication somewhere.”

While around 85 percent of the original Marvel cast are back for What If…?, the promise of more cartoon projects could persuade the other remaining 15 percent to reprise their roles in animated form.
