The fifth season of Money Heist will bring El Professor (played by Álvaro Morte) and his crew’s stories to an explosive conclusion later this year. However, fans are still calling for a sequel or spin-off to the Spanish Netflix phenomenon, which could eventually become a reality.

Showrunner Álex Pina and director Jesús Colmenar have teased a possible spin-off set within the world of Money Heist could eventually be in the works.

The series will come to an end with its fifth season, with the first block of episodes coming to Netflix in September followed by the second half in December.

However, the Spanish crime drama has become one of the streaming service’s most popular series of the past few years, and viewers are still hungry for more.

Following calls for a spin-off series centred on Álvaro Morte’s criminal mastermind El Professor, series director Jesús Colmenar explained why he’s hesitant to make it happen.

“Would I do a spin-off of The Professor?” he asked, during a recent virtual set visit via indianexpress.com.

“Maybe, but it’s already in Money Heist. I mean: his story, his reasons, his why… is already going to be told in Money Heist.”

Colmenar then hinted he’d be more interested in exploring a follow-up series based on one of the show’s more tertiary characters.

He continued: “Spin-offs for a very secondary character who attracts a lot of attention work, and you can create a new series based on their story.”

His reluctance to commit to a spin-off based on El Professor could also reflect certain rumours circling the new season.

A number of fans have tipped the ingenious bank robber to be killed in season five, so a potential spin-off would have to be set before the main events of Money Heist.

If speculation is true, a sequel series based around the likes of Rio (Miguel Herrán), Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) or even Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri) could be more likely.

But, as Colmenar reiterated, most of the supporting cast’s backstories have already been explored in flashbacks throughout the series.

Set photos and casting details have also indicated the new season will reveal more about the show’s narrator, Tokyo, before she joined up with El Professor.

Even so, the wide range of side characters introduced throughout the series are still full of story potential, and the director maintained any one of them could head their own spin-off.

Colmenar went on: “You could make a spin-off about any of them because I think what’s great about Money Heist is that it has characters who have many layers and many stories.

“But we would have to create a new universe. So, the answer is yes, but it depends.”

Money Heist creator and showrunner Álex Pina also echoed the director’s reluctance to commit to a follow-up.

He said: “When you make a spin-off, it has to be about a totally different universe, and you have to put the focus elsewhere.

“On the one hand, you could make a spin-off of every character in Money Heist because they all have enough for a series, but at the same time I think that Money Heist already tells their stories.”

As Pina has already committed to a number of new projects with Netflix, including a new season of Sky Rojo coming out this weekend, it may be some time before he returns to the world of Money Heist.

Money Heist Part 5: Volume 1 will be released on Friday, September 3 on Netflix. Volume 2 is coming Friday, December 3.
