Millions of viewers once again tuned in for this week’s thrilling episode of NCIS, which introduced newcomer Jessica Knight (played by Katrina Law) to the current team. However, a jaw-dropping moment from the promo for next week’s highly anticipated finale on CBS may have confirmed fears that Knight is being floated as a potential replacement for Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham).

Agents Bishop and Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) finally shared a kiss in the new teaser for the upcoming finale of NCIS season 19, ‘Rule 91’.

In the last episode of the show’s current outing, the recently dismissed Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and Marcie (Pam Dawber) track down an elusive killer.

Meanwhile, Agent Bishop’s future with the team is put under fire when she’s implicated in an unearthed NSA leak.

As the stakes are ramped up for the end of NCIS’ 19th instalment, all eyes were on a split-second moment between Bishop and Torres.

After several seasons of will-they-won’t-they tension, the two agents were finally seen sharing a kiss in the latest promo.

While long-running fans of the series were thrilled by the possibility the popular pairing could finally be getting together, other viewers were concerned the scene could have worrying implications.

With a new agent potentially joining the team for season 19, some fans debated about Bishop’s impending departure from the series in the YouTube comments for the new trailer.

One viewer replied: “I can’t wait for the Ellick kiss, I hope it’s not a goodbye kiss please.”

And a more optimistic fan said: “Plot twist Bishop is leaving but to join the Hawaii team now that would be interesting.”

NCIS’s upcoming Hawaii-based spin-off has just announced Vanessa Lachey as the lead, but there could be plenty of opportunities for the two series to crossover.

Diehard fans of the series have noted that the promotional trailers revealed a romantic kiss between Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) ahead of Pablo’s departure.

Another YouTube user commented: “Seems history is repeating with Bishop and Torres like it did with Tony and Ziva and Gibbs and Sloan departing with a kiss.”

They then joked: “In-house relationships really do not work on this show.”

Meanwhile, Wilmer Valderrama has also fuelled theories after teasing a massive cliffhanger for the end of season 18.

His comments led some fans to believe that Bishop’s potential exit could be left open, only for her to change her mind and return to the team at the start of the next instalment.

One viewer speculated on Twitter: “The actress has never given any indication she was leaving. So if she does it will be for a few eps to clear her name maybe.”

Though it’s not out of the realm of possibility that CBS have kept Bishop’s exit as a surprise, most major departures from the series are announced well ahead of time.

Most recently, series regular Maria Bello said goodbye to her role as Jack Sloane, but fans were already aware that the star’s contract would be coming to an end this season.

Reactions to newcomer Jessica Knight have been strong so far, so fans are keeping their fingers crossed that she’s being brought in to replace Sloane, and not as a way to soften the blow of Bishop’s retirement.

NCIS season 18 concludes Tuesday, May 25 on CBS.
