NCIS season 19 has already started off with a series of major revelations and changes. Agent Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) discovered the identity of the serial killer, Paul LeMere (Jason Wiles), while also putting aside his differences with the FBI joining the investigation. Led by Alden Parker (Gary Cole), the pair are set to go on a road trip together, but Gibbs could be leaving the CBS franchise for good.
Is Agent Gibbs leaving NCIS in episode 4?
Ahead of the release of season 19, fans were already preparing themselves for a very different season.
With Ellie Bishop’s (Emily Wickersham) exit and Gibbs suspended, it was clear from the outset the NCIS team would be going through a number of major changes.
Then came the news Harmon would only be starring in a handful of episodes, with an unnamed source confirming to TV Line his episode count with be in “low single digits”.
Across the first three episodes of season 19, Gibbs has played a prominent role in the proceedings, even with Parker stepping in to co-lead the investigation.
The pair haven’t seen eye-to-eye so far, with Parker initially demanding Gibbs’ removal from the case due to his suspension.
Yet, the two are prepping to go on a road trip together ahead of episode four, a trip which will no doubt help bridge the gap between them.
In the first official promo released by CBS, episode four, titled Great Wide Open, looks like it could be Gibbs’ last moments.
While unconfirmed, there is plenty to suggest the trailer is hinting at Gibbs’ exit from the show, with a couple of key lines of dialogue pointing to the inevitable.
The synopsis of episode four details how Gibbs will be heading to Alaska to continue the investigation, removing him from the rest of the main team.
Clearly, Gibbs will be separate from most of the team in episode four and beyond, but things are never as simple as they seem in NCIS.
At the start of the trailer, narration can be heard saying: “Gibbs has managed to avoid paying the price for his actions, that ends now.”
Gibbs clearly has enemies, with NCIS and FBI looking to remove him from the picture, but it is one moment between him and Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) which looks to be a final goodbye.
The two are in a car together when Gibbs turns to Nick and says: “I’ll be fine.”
Nick replies: “I know you will.”
Just how final this conversation is remains to be seen, but later in the promo Gibbs is buying guns at a harbour.
This is almost definitely in preparation for his mission in Alaska, but fans will have to wait to see if Gibbs returns.
With regards to Gibbs’ future on the show, initially, it was reported Harmon was looking to leave the series after season 18.
However, the star came to an agreement with CBS which would allow him to stay but in a much smaller capacity.
Last year, CBS Entertainment Chief Kelly Kahl told Deadline: “We take it year by year with Mark [Harmon].
“We’d love to have him as long as he’d like to be here…. [W]e’re happy to work around his schedule.”
So far in season 19, Gibbs has appeared as regularly as in previous seasons, suggesting his absence is imminent.
If he is truly set to only appear in “low single digits”, episode four being the start of his departure would make sense.
Some fans agree as well, with James Amick commenting on the trailer: “If Gibbs is not going to be in the season for a while then maybe he goes into witness protection.” [sic]
Gibbs’ exit remains to be explained, but answers are coming soon for fans.
NCIS season 19 continues Mondays on CBS in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
