NCIS is currently in the middle of its winter hiatus, taking a break from viewers’ screens over the festive period. The CBS police procedural won’t be away for too long though as season 19 is set to continue on Monday, January 3, 2022. Agent Leroy Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) was the latest to leave the show but he is far from the only one with former colleague Agent Clayton Reeves (Duane Henry) also making a devastating departure.

Reeves quickly became a key member of the team, forming close friendships with forensic expert Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) and fellow agent Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama).
But it ended disastrously for him at the end of season 15 in episode One Step Forward.
Abby invited Reeves as her plus-one at a new restaurant for dinner but when they were walking home, a mugger pulled a gun and demanded money.
When a shot was fired, Reeves selflessly stepped in front of Abby to protect her and died shortly after.
His death, in turn, led to Abby’s exit from NCIS as she was distraught knowing that he died saving her life.
So in the series 15 finale, Abby quit her job and decided to travel to London with Reeves’ body.
This was so she could start the charity he had been talking about to help homeless women.
Actor Henry has recently opened up on how his character’s death had not been planned from the beginning.
The character of Reeves was brought in by the former NCIS showrunner Gary Glasberg.
Sadly, he died at the age of 50 in his sleep from unknown causes which put a spanner in the works.
Speaking to Parade, Henry explained: “He passed away straight after I got the part.
“So, a lot of the ideas for my character died with him. It was very tough [for the other writers] to hustle around and build up scenarios and scenes for this character because it was all in Gary’s head, and it was early on and no one expected that.”

Henry says years after Reeves’ death, he still receives messages from NCIS fans who say his exit “hits them in their own personal way”.
At the time of getting the role, Henry was struggling financially with nowhere stable to live so the drama came at the right time.
Since leaving, he has been in Captain Marvel as Talos-Kree Soldier and comedy TV series What Just Happened??! as Cooper.
This year, Henry stars opposite Melissa Hart in the Lifetime Christmas movie Mistletoe in Montana.
Henry added: “I couldn’t have asked for a better exit.
“As I say all the time, if someone would have asked, ‘How would you have wanted to leave a show?’ I couldn’t have done it any better because I love her so much, she did so much for me.
“And I still speak to her [Perrette], we check up on each other.”
NCIS season 19 continues on Monday, January 3, 2022 on CBS in America. A UK release date hasn’t yet been announced.
