'Power Book II: Ghost' Mecca Actor Drops Hints About His Season 2 Storyline

Power Book II: Ghost returned to Starz on Sunday, Nov. 21, and with it came the introduction of a mysterious character named Mecca. Portrayed by Daniel Sunjata, Mecca arrives just when Monet Tejada is looking to replace Rico Barnes, her previous drug connect. His interest in the Tejada family raises Cane Tejada’s suspicions that he could be the feds, and while Sunjata won’t confirm anything, he admits Cane isn’t wrong to question him.

Who is Mecca in ‘Power Book II: Ghost’?

Cane meets Mecca in the first episode of Power Book II: Ghost Season 2. He quickly becomes skeptical of him as Mecca prods him about his family, accusing him of being a narc. Mecca is explaining himself when the two are suddenly ambushed by GTG members. Mecca is able to overpower most of them, but one gets away.

Later, Cane is called to meet with Mecca, arriving to find that he got the GTG guy who escaped. Cane exacts revenge by breaking the man’s neck and decides to work with Mecca. At Monet’s, he happily tells her he found them a new connect, but Monet isn’t interested. Cane leaves, not realizing Mecca is quietly watching from down the street.

Sunjata on his character in ‘Power Book II: Ghost’

Sunjata, of course, can’t get too detailed when it comes to his character, but he understands Cane’s initial concerns.

“I wish I could tell you but that… now, you’re leading me into deep water, dangerous water,” he told Digital Spy. “I can’t, I’m contractually obligated. Just, I don’t know. You’d have to watch the show. But you’re very observant. You’re very observant.”

He suggested paying “careful attention to the dialogue” to find out more about Mecca.

“Not only the dialogue, but just the flow of the story,” he continued. “Actually, I’m forgetting some things that are coming to me now. In terms of his past relationships… Light will be shed… with people that are currently in the world of Ghost that will definitely, you know, it will cue the audience into how he became who he is, for sure.”

In a separate interview with HollywoodLife, Sunjata was a bit more forthcoming, teasing that his character is a wildcard.

“An unpredictable one and not always necessarily adversarial,” he shared. “It depends on what agenda he’s trying to massage. He can be friendly. Obviously can be very violent. I think the storyline of Mecca definitely throws a wrench into the world of Ghost and the choices he makes have reverberations for lots of the other characters.”

It looks like the Tejadas are in for it this time.

There are also other problems facing them

The big focus of this season, however, is the aftermath of the murder of Professor Jabari Reynolds. Tariq pulled the trigger right in front of Cane, knowing Jabari would never back off of him and the Tejadas. But that probably wasn’t the smartest move.

“I think by Cane knowing that he feels like he has a one-up on Tariq,” Woody McClain (Cane Tejada) told HollywoodLife. “Now he feels like they’re on the same level, so I think he’s going to have a lot of fun with that. A lot of fun.”

Fans can watch the show on Sundays on Starz.
