Patty Jenkins is set to direct Rogue Squadron, and in doing so she will become the first woman to ever direct a Star Wars film. Patty Jenkins will be the first woman to direct a ‘Star Wars’ film

Disney Investor Day 2020 was held on Dec. 10, 2020, and Jenkins was announced as the director for Rogue Squadron, a Star Wars film slated for 2023. According to StarWars.com, the movie will focus on “a new generation of starfighter pilots.”

For Jenkins, the project is a dream come true, and a statement about her enthusiasm was posted on StarWars.com:

“It’s been a lifelong dream as a filmmaker to one day make a great fighter pilot film. As the daughter of a great fighter pilot myself, some of the best memories of my life are of seeing my father’s squadron take off in their F4s every morning, and hearing and feeling the awe-inspiring power and grace. When he passed away in service to this country it ignited a burning desire to one day channel all of those emotions into one great film. When the perfect story arrived in combination with another true love of mine, the incomparable world of Star Wars, I knew I’d finally found my next film.”

The director has a number of upcoming projects

Jenkins is well-known for directing Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 with Gal Gadot starring in the leading role. Jenkins will team up with Gadot again for a Cleopatra movie. With the Cleopatra film, Rogue Squadron, and a third Wonder Woman on the horizon, Jenkins has a number of future projects.

“You can never do it in one year. You could never do a good Star Wars movie in one year or a good Cleopatra in one year. I think each of those movies take two years probably,” Jenkins told Collider.

She continued, “Certainly, until I’m on set shooting Star Wars, I could be developing all sorts of other things and pushing them forward. It is actually possible. So, I think that’s apparently how people do it, do multiple things at one time, which I’m usually pretty singularly focused, but I’m getting better at this all the time.”

What Patty Jenkins can reveal about ‘Rogue Squadron’

While speaking with Collider, Jenkins was asked about the screenplay for Rogue Squadron. When asked about who was officially writing the screenplay, Jenkins was unable to officially answer.

“I want him to have his own proper announcement, so I’m going to wait until that comes out,” she said.

Even though Jenkins could not reveal who is writing the screenplay for Rogue Squadron, she was able to give an idea about the movie’s writing process.

“… but we’re very far into the, we’re finishing the treatment basically, which is pretty big. So it ends up being like where you’re fairly close to a screen, a well-along screenplay by the time I’m done with the treatment in my process,” Jenkins told Collider. “So yeah, we’ve been working on it for a while. It’s going great. I’m super excited about it.”
