The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins skipped mate’s wedding to appear on Masked Singer

“Sorry I missed your wedding, mate, ITV dressed me up as an illuminated chameleon to sing Radiohead.”

The Masked Singer’s Justin Hawkins skipped his best mate’s nuptials to appear on the show.

The Darkness singer, who finally removed his reptilian oven gloves and peeled off his Lycra suit, says: “I was supposed to be best man at a wedding in Australia, but it was too good to turn down.

" used a combination of bluffery, bare-faced lies and vague muttering to explain my absences. I’m basically James Bond.”

Justin, 44, hints he’ll wear the costume to a wedding in future, so that’s something for his pal to look forward to.

He says Davina McCall’s remarks on his “athletic” figure, and flirty Rita Ora’s quips, were “flattering”.

But he says of his tight outfit: “I did feel a little exposed in certain key areas.”

Explaining why he appeared on the show – despite The Darkness having a new single out with Abbey Clancy in the video – he said: “I wanted to take part in something that would be slightly surreal, and the secrecy made it exciting.”

Sadly, he was no match for the Duck’s Ave Maria in the sing-off, and had to go. More madcap masks next week.

The Masked Singer continues on ITV on Saturday at 7pm.
