‘The Farewell’ Director Lulu Wang Sets Next Movie, Sci-Fi Drama ‘Children of the New World’

Lulu Wang, director of the Sundance darling “The Farewell” starring Awkwafina, has set her next project.
She’ll take on the sci-fi film “Children of the New World,” an adaptation of Alexander Weinstein’s short story collection. His stories take place in in near-future realities set in utopian societies and post-collapse countries, and tackle the greater implications of technologies that span virtual reality to memory implants to robotics.
Wang is reteaming with producer Big Beach after the success of “The Farewell,” which premiered to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and landed a major deal with distributor A24 (and reportedly attracted a big-money offer from a streaming service).
Also on board “Children of the New World” is the production company Votiv.
“I could not have made ‘The Farewell’ without my fantastic producers at Big Beach, so I’m looking forward to this new collaboration, with them and Votiv, to continue exploring the evolving dynamics of family,” Wang said in a statement.
