Last year’s thrilling season of The Handmaid’s Tale saw June Osbourne (played by Elisabeth Moss) striking at the heart of Gilead by leading over 50 children to safety.
However, June paid a heavy price for her successful mission as the renegade Handmaid was shot down after a nasty altercation with a Gilead guardian.
Now left on the brink of death in the arms of her Mayday comrades, the heart of the resistance could be incapacitated for much of the next season.
Filming of The Handmaid’s Tale’s fourth season had begun in Toronto earlier this year, but was put on hold following the outbreak of COVID-19.
With much of the action moving to Canada when the drama returns next year, all eyes are on June’s husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and best friend Moira (Samira Wiley) to take things into their own hands.
It is still unclear if June will be free from the clutches of Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) or the Waterfords in the next season.
If previous instalments are anything to go by, though, fans are already anticipating more traumatic experiences and potentially a thrilling rescue mission are on the way.
The first teaser trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale’s return in 2021 has revealed Moira is set to play a major role in the continuing activism and protests against North America’s oppressive patriarchy.
Furthermore, some perceptive fans have noticed some vital foreshadowing from the first season which seems to suggest Moira will eventually hold the key to June’s freedom.
One eagle-eyed fan took to Reddit when they remembered a crucial line of dialogue from the show’s very first episode.
So far, the series has revolved around June and Luke’s continuing hunt for their daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake).
After being forcefully separated by Gilead, Hannah became a surrogate daughter for Commander and Mrs. Mackenzie (Amy Landecker) and renamed Agnes.

The pair were briefly reunited in season two, but June hasn’t seen her since and Hannah/Agnes’ whereabouts is currently unknown.
This viewer posited season four could hinge on a solemn promise Moira made to June in the series premiere.
Redditor jojo121714 posted: “In the first episode, when June is first taken with the other girls and Moira for their ‘training’ or whatever, Moira tells June they will get Hannah together.
“Then they pinky promise. Anyone else think Moira will eventually come back and help June get Hannah in the end?”
In the show’s bleak dystopian future, a pinky promise is the closest thing the two friends had to a sacred oath, so it stands to reason Moira is still determined to reunite mother with daughter.
Some fans were frustrated when June was still unable to save Hannah in season three, so hopefully it’s only a matter of time before Moira fulfills her promise.
Elisabeth Moss and the cast and crew are confirmed to be returning to set soon, so things are looking good for the hit series to return within the next year.
The Handmaid’s Tale season four will return to Hulu and Channel 4 in 2021.
