Fans were introduced to Esther Keyes (played by McKenna Grace) in season four as the complicated teenage bride, who provided a safe house for June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) and other fugitive Handmaids. By the end of the series, Esther was caught at the Red Center leaving fans questioning her fate, thankfully McKenna shared her character’s future.

McKenna joined the other stars and showrunners of The Handmaid’s Tale for an interview with Deadline.

When asked about her character in the upcoming season, the actress revealed she didn’t know what the road ahead looked like.

She stated: “I have no idea where Mrs Keyes is going to end up, I have my fingers crossed that she’ll be able to do some cool things”

Season four saw Esther Keyes stand out from the other Wives in Gilead not only by age but also by mentally.

She created a safe house for runaway handmaids on her pig farm, allowing them to rest, have shelter and food on their road to freedom.

Esther also killed the Guardian who raped her at her husband Commander Keyes’ (Bill MacDonald) order.

In the episode fans also learned she was only 13 and was forced to marry someone old enough to be her grandfather.

As she couldn’t bear children, her husband regularly sent other commanders, Guardians and Eyes to rape her

She later confessed to June, she had been getting revenge by secretly poisoning the commander with Nightshade.

This caused him to become senile, however, it’s yet to be seen if this was the cause of his death.

McKenna continued: “I have no idea where she’s going, I feel like she could go in a million different directions.”

Fans also agree as they have spent the time in-between trying to predict what her upcoming storyline could be.

After the Guardian she killed didn’t report back they went and raided the farm and in the upsetting scene, Esther was taken to the Red Center.

Under the ruling of evil disciplinarian Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), Esther had been stripped of the little privilege she had as a wife and was forced to become a Handmaid.

Some viewers believe she will find a way to escape Gilead and become free in Canada because she had begged June to take her before they were caught.

Others believe she will escape with Janine Lindo (Madeline Brewer) who was also caught and returned back.

However, there is a minority of fans who think June will return to Gilead and help both Esther and Janine escape.

Esther has also shown rebellion against Aunt Lydia, as she went on a food strike, refusing to comply with any rules.

Back in season one, Janine’s attitude resulted in the removal of her eye, so she understood the extent of punishment and was able to convince her to follow the rules.

Thankfully, season five has been confirmed and hopefully, production will soon be underway, however, will be updated with information.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 is available to stream on Hulu in the USA and airs Sundays on Channel 4 in the UK.
