The 'Insecure' Season 4 Update You've Been Waiting For

Fans have been waiting with bated breath for Insecure Season 4. The HBO series wrapped its third season at the end of 2018, and we’ve barely heard anything since. But on Dec. 13, new information (finally) emerged. Here’s the latest update on Insecure Season 4.

What to know about ‘Insecure’ Season 4

In an April interview with Vulture, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said that the show would not return until 2020, citing leading lady Issa Rae‘s busy schedule.

“Well, Issa became a big movie star!” Bloys said of Rae, who appeared in the 2019 box office hit, Little. “We’re not the first place to deal with this, but when you’re in business with very creative and talented people, there’s a lot more opportunities for people to do things. Issa, I think, partly wanted a break to come back to it fresh.”

Luckily, it seems that season four could premiere in the earlier part of 2020 rather than later, as filming has already wrapped.

On Dec. 13, actress Amanda Seales broke the news on Instagram.

“Thassa wrap on @insecurehbo Season 4 for the hardcore!” Seales captioned a photo with her co-stars, Rae, Yvonne Orji, and Natasha Rothwell. “See y’all in 2020!”

What will ‘Insecure’ Season 4 be about and who’s returning?

Insecure showrunner Prentice Penny told Refinery29 in October 2018 that fans should expect lots of drama. In the third season, BFFs Issa (Rae) and Molly (Orji) started dating a pair of roommates, which could cause some tension in their friendship.

“Typically we’ve always had their relationships as ‘Issa’s dating this guy’ and ‘Molly’s dating this guy.’ And never the twain shall sort of meet… what’s interesting now is what will this friendship be like [in a new situation]?” Penny explained.

The full cast is unclear, at the time of writing. But we know that the women pictured above are returning.

TBH, it’s even a shock that Seales returned. In September, Seales made headlines for slamming Rae’s publicist for refusing to allow her into an Emmys party meant to celebrate Black Hollywood.

“She has never been nice to me ever,” Seales said in a later episode of her podcast, Small Doses. “She’s always had a curtness, and she’s always seemed to be bothered simply by my demeanor, my way of communicating with her, etcetera. At a certain point, it became, ‘Well this is not someone I need to speak to because I don’t work for her, she doesn’t work for me. There’s no reason for us to interact for all intents and purposes.’ So we don’t.”

Seales noted that she’d tried to express her concerns to Rae, who apparently told her that she did not want to get involved.

The drama prompted many reactions on Twitter, including one from Seales’ Insecure co-star Sarunas J. Jackson. In a now-deleted tweet, he wrote, “You can’t be a disrespectful-a** human being and expect people to want to hang out with you. It’s quite simple. Sit it out.”

But maybe they’ve worked it out?

Either way, get the popcorn ready. Insecure Season 4 is on the way.
