NHS Dr Ellie Cannon has called for “clear coronavirus guidance” saying that the UK is in an “absolute pickle” due to “very high infection rates, and very unclear guidance”. The slamming came after Sajid Javid’s Downing Street news conference speech, where he urged the public to take up their offer of a jab.

Speaking to Jeremy Vine show on Five, Dr Ellie Cannon from the NHS said: “What’s important to recognise is that what is actually killing people is uncertainty.

“And uncertainty is killing people from COVID, and it’s killing people from the Mental Health pandemic that we’ve also developed in the last 18 months.

“The uncertainty that we’ve had to live within the last 18 months has been absolutely impossible.

“We had a press conference yesterday from Sajid Javid -we all thought he was going to make some announcement.”

She continued: “He didn’t really say anything.

“He sort of said, ;well yeah, some people are unvaccinated, we need to get vaccinated’.

“What we need is clear guidelines.

“There’s no point Sajid Javid standing up for the press conference and saying, ‘people need to wear face masks in crowded spaces’, having been 24 hours earlier on the Tory benches in the House of Commons where only one person Teresa May, was wearing a face mask.”

She continued: “We’ve got so much uncertainty.

“I can tell you from clinic. People are no longer following restrictions.

“People are not getting tested because they don’t want to.

“And people are absolutely fed up.

“Also unvaccinated people are getting ill, and I’m seeing that day after day in general practice, and also in hospital medicine.”

She added: “So, we are in an absolute pickle in the UK with these very high rates, and very unclear guidance.”

Speaking at the news conference yesterday, Mr Javid said: “If not enough people get their booster jabs, if not enough of those people that were eligible for the original offer… if they don’t come forward, if people don’t wear masks when they really should in a really crowded place with lots of people that they don’t normally hang out with, if they’re not washing their hands and stuff, it’s going to hit us all.

“And it would of course make it more likely we’re going to have more restrictions.”

Daily Covid cases have been above 40,000 for eight days in a row, with 49,139 new infections reported on Wednesday.
