Vardy v Rooney Channel 4 drama reveals Gemma Collins link to Wagatha Christie
Channel 4's Wagatha Christie drama, Vardy v Rooney, which aired tonight revealed Gemma Collins' link to the famous trial.
Former TOWIE star Gemma was mentioned during the Wagatha Christie court case between Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney, with the moment seen in the dramatisation of the trial tonight.
Channel 4’s drama is based on the Wagatha Christie case and uses the real court transcripts.
It stars This Is England actress Chanel Cresswell as Coleen Rooney and Harry Potter star Natalia Tena as Rebekah Vardy.
Michael Sheen, known for his portrayals of real-life figures such as Sir Tony Blair and broadcaster David Frost, appears as Coleen’s barrister David Sherborne.
The Wagatha Christie trial which took place earlier this summer resulted in Rebekah losing her libel battle against 36-year-old Coleen over a viral social media post, after a High Court judge found it was “substantially true”.
In the post, Coleen said she had carried out a months-long “sting operation” and accused Rebekah of leaking “false stories” about her private life to the press.
The first part of the two-part series aired tonight, with Rebekah, played by Natalia Tena, taking to the stand.
He read out WhatsApp messages between Rebekah and her agent Caroline Watt in court.
In the message exchange, Watt appeared to admit she’d leaked a story about Coleen’s car crash to the press in 2019, writing: "It wasn't someone she trusted. It was me."
When Rebekah was quizzed on why she didn’t reply and challenge her agent, she said she was too "distracted" to reply.
After looking at the time of the messages, Rebekah said she was busy giving her children a bath, before adding that she was watching an episode of Dancing On Ice – the episode in which Gemma Collins suffered a bad fall on the ice.
Rebekah said to the court: "That seems true what she's saying but I'm just looking at the times.
"It's 18.47, that's when I'm bathing my children. There's no response from me."
Sherbourne asks: "Why didn't you, after the bath if that's what you were doing, why didn't you message her then and say 'What are you talking about?
"You didn't do it. Why didn't you come back and say 'Ive just read what you've written and I can't believe it'. You don't need to respond do you Mrs Vardy because you know exactly what she's talking about."
Vardy replied: "Because if I may, my lady, I have seen the conversation that follows. And, without wanting to make fun of anyone, it was actually Dancing on Ice.
"Gemma Collins faceplanting on the ice was the next message. Thats what I had on in the background when I was bathing the children."
Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama continues on Channel 4 on Thursday, December 22 at 9pm
