Virgin River fans are getting worried about the future of Hope McCrea (played by Annette O’Toole) as the character was mainly absent from the third season. By the end of season three, Hope hardly made an appearance after being such an important character in the first two seasons. Now some Netflix viewers are suspecting the character could die in hospital.
Will Hope die in hospital ahead of season four?
The second season of Virgin River ended dramatically with the shooting of Jack (Martin Henderson) in his bar.
Three weeks after the gripping cliffhanger, fans finally got to catch up with the characters once more in the third season of the show.
In seasons one and two, mayor of the town Hope was the main link between the rest of the residents.
Knowing almost everything about everyone, she cemented herself as one of the most crucial characters in the series.
Sadly, in season three, Hope barely made an appearance after it was revealed she had left the town to visit her aunt.
During the first couple of episodes, Doc Mullins (Tim Matheson) tried desperately to contact her after news of a hurricane was coming directly for where Hope was heading.
The first time viewers saw Hope was on a video call in the third episode when Doc finally got a hold of her.
Eventually, Hope made her way back to the town when she received the news of Lilly’s (Lynda Boyd) tragic death.
But before she could arrive home, Doc found out that Hope had been in a terrible car accident.
Hope was sent immediately to a hospital, with Doc visiting her in the final episode.
The doctors informed him that she would need to be put into a medically induced coma before fans got the chance to see her in person for the entire season.
Some fans are now worried Hope will die in hospital as the lack of an appearance looks like the early signs of an exit.
Taking to Twitter, one fan said: “And I’m gonna need like double Hope next season to compensate the crap of S03.”
“Out here watching Virgin River, praying for hope to get through the damn car accident,” another added.
In reality, actor O’Toole could not make the filming schedule of season three due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions.
The best the actress could do was the small video call scene, which O’Toole filmed off-set.
Luckily, fans don’t have to fear for the future of Hope in the show, as it looks likely the star will return in a potential season four, depending on current restrictions.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Sue Tenney said: “If we have a fourth season, everyone is now vaccinated and the pandemic is not what it was.
“So, I would hope that we would have Annette back.”
Currently, the fourth season has not been confirmed by Netflix, though fans are holding out hope news of the series renewal will be imminent.
Virgin River seasons 1-3 are available to watch exclusively on Netflix.
