A man hunt has been launched at a Louisiana hospital after reports of a gunman on the loose.

Police issued an urgent warning to people living near a Louisiana medical centre after a man was gunned down and the suspected shooter remains at large.

Shreveport Police say they are hunting for 41-year-old Taniel Cole after a man was shot inside St Mary's Medical Center in Shreveport early this morning.

According to local reports Cole reportedly shot one man in the leg and has non-life-threatening injuries.

Hostage negotiators and a SWAT team have also been called to the scene.

Shreveport Police Sgt Angie Willhite has confirmed cops are treating it as an active incident.

“The suspect made threats to kill any law enforcement officer or any others who tried to stop him today,” Willhite said. “Our SWAT team, hostage negotiator team is in there actively searching every nook and cranny of St Mary’s Hospital.”

People living near the hospital have been warned not to leave their homes. A local school has also been shut.

A massive police presence remains on the scene.
