Boy, 5, fighting for life after being mauled in face and neck by a dog at a home

A five-year-old child has been left fighting for his life after he was mauled by a dog on his face and neck.

The boy was at home playing in Sunshine, Lake Macquarie in Australia on Sunday November 29 when he was attacked by a dog.

He was reportedly bitten on his face and his neck by the animal at around 4.30pm in the afternoon.

Ambulance crews, including a helicopter, rushed to the house and he was immediately treated by paramedics.

The child was then flown by Westpac helicopter to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in western Sydney.

Police have since seized the dog and launchd an investigation into the attack in conjunction with Lake Macquarie Council.

It is unclear if the dog was known to the family, but the animal had been in the home at the time of the attack.

The boy's family reportedly told 9News they hoped he would receive treatment as soon as possible.

A New South Wales Ambulance spokesman said the injuries could be life-changing.

Pictures from the scene show two ambulances and a police care outside a residential home, with at least four paramedics.

In a separate image, a helicopter can be seen positioned a nearby field and three paramedics are carrying equipment to the home.

A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed to News AU the force had attended a presence in response to a dog bite.

The devastating attack comes just one month after a mother lost her newborn baby after he was mauled by the family’s pet Rottweiler in New Zealand.

He was immediately rushed by St Johns Ambulance to Waikato Hospital where he was treated at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Sadly, the child had critical injuries and spent the night fighting for his life, only to pass away the following day.
