A man is due to appear in court later today over the death of a British friend following a fatal stabbing at an Algarve tourist apartment.
The unnamed suspect, believed to have been on holiday with his pal, was held after the discovery of the victim’s body by a wall at a luxury apartment complex in the popular resort of Albufeira early yesterday morning.
He had already gone into cardiac arrest by the time emergency responders arrived and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
The dead man was initially described as English but one local report today said both the dead man and the suspect held by police were from Northern Ireland.
It was a Bank Holiday yesterday in Portugal and police have yet to make any official comment.

The ongoing investigation is being handled by the Policia Judiciaria following an initial intervention by the GNR police force.
Firefighters were among the first to reach the scene of the crime, a gated estate called Correeira Luxury Residence.
Albufeira fire chief Rui Fernandes told respected Portuguese daily Jornal de Noticias: ‘We were alerted at 6.37am to a person who was said to be unconscious in the street.
‘We arrived to find a man who was in cardiac arrest, with rigor mortis and incise wounds to his chest.’
He also told the paper the victim was inside the tourist complex against a wall rather than outside in the street.
The man arrested by police, who is understood to be around 20, is believed to have been sharing the apartment with the man he is suspected of killing.
He was described by Portuguese tabloid Correio da Manha as being disorientated and apparently ‘under the effects of alcohol or drugs’ when he was taken away by police.
Officers also removed a knife thought to be the weapon used in the attack.

The exact relationship between the two men is not yet known.
Police are said to be working on the theory the victim was stabbed inside the apartment and collapsed on the ground outside the property as he tried to reach the street to raise help.
The dead man is believed to have been aged around 25 to 30.
An autopsy has yet to take place.
The Correeira Luxury Residence apartment complex is situated around a mile from popular Oura Beach. It has two swimming pools for guests.
