Family living in motorway’s shadow say house shakes but find noise ‘soothing’

A family who live beneath a motorway claim their house shakes every time traffic drives overhead.

Despite the less-than-ideal situation, Arthur and Gwyneth Howells refuse to leave the property that they bought in 1969 for just £2,500.

Five decades ago the road, now known as the M4, but now the noise and congestion have got significantly worse.

The two-bedroom property in Port Talbot, South Wales, houses the two retirees and their son Jason.

Describing the trembles, Gwyneth said they feel like “companions to us now” and now they have learned to live with it, it can be “soothing”.

Telling The Mirror that they actually missed the chaos during lockdown, when the roads were quieter.

Arthur, 80, said they all "hated the silence" and when they went on holiday to a rural area found it difficult to sleep because it was too quiet.

So, 33-year-old Jason's a HGV driver and toots his horn each time he passes over the stretch.

Gwyneth told The Sun: "As soon as I hear that lorry horn, I know it's time for me to get Jason's dinner ready and sure enough, a couple of minutes later, he walks through the door."

The family also say they are as "fit as fiddles" and have never suffered any health concerns due to the fumes they breathe in constantly.

"They've reduced the speed limit to 50mph here on this stretch, so that has cut a lot of the pollution, but honestly we've never noticed it," said Gwyneth.
