Prime minister Jean Castex has announced the new measures this afternoon, as several regions have been hit badly hit by the epidemic. Mr Castex said a new four-week lockdown will begin from 7pm tomorrow, but schools will remain open and confinement will be less strict than in previous nationwide lockdowns.
Essential goods shops, including bookstores, will remain open and outdoor activities will be allowed within a 10 km radius, but travelling to different regions will not be allowed.
It comes as France reported a further 34,998 cases of Covid today, which was down slightly from the more than 38,000 new infections the day before.
Another 268 people have also died, bringing the country’s total fatality toll to 91,679.
