Hamilton arrives in Bahrain as he begins attempt to retake title

Formula One is back – and so are Ferrari! Lewis Hamilton arrives at paddock in Bahrain in matching flower print outfit as he begins attempt to retake title from Max Verstappen – but Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc takes pole position in qualifying

  • Lewis Hamilton, 37, disappointed fans to only start in fifth position for tomorrow’s Bahrain Grand Prix
  • Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will start on pole ahead of world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull
  • Leclerc’s pole will raise hopes that a Ferrari revival is on the cards after three years of underperformance

Lewis Hamilton stepped out in a kooky floral print outfit as he arrived at the Bahrain Grand Prix qualifying before putting in a below average performance to qualify in fifth position for the race tomorrow – with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on pole for the first race of the season.

Hamilton, 37, who recently announced he will be changing his name to include his mother’s maiden name, sported a Jacquemus deep purple and orange floral printed ensemble.

His eye-catching arrival was not replicated on the track as Mercedes continued to struggle with Hamilton’s fifth place on the grid likely to intensify fears of a poor season ahead for the previously dominant team.

Leclerc’s pole position will raise hopes that Ferrari can regain the success of yesteryear after three years of underperformance on the track.

World champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull completes the front row as he launches his campaign for a second consecutive championship after the controversy surrounding his narrow victory at last season’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix which clinched his maiden win.

Looking as fashion forward as ever, he teamed the structured zip up over shirt with a matching pair of wool blend Bermuda shorts.

Lewis added a pair of Viron white vegan leather combat boots with a contrasting chunky black sole.

To complete his look the F1 ace shielded his eyes with some square framed purple Louis Vuitton sunglasses, which set him back £595.

This comes as the F1 superstar announced that he is changing his name to incorporate his mother’s maiden name.

He explained that he doesn’t ‘really fully understand the whole idea that when people get married the woman loses her name’.

The seven-time world champion said he intends to use his mother Carmen’s maiden name Larbalestier as a new middle name so that the surname can live on with him.

Speaking ahead of the new Formula One season which starts in Bahrain on Sunday, he said: ‘It would mean the world to my family [to win an eighth title]. It would mean a lot to me knowing that, for example, I’m really proud of my family’s name: Hamilton.

Speaking ahead of the new Formula One season which starts in Bahrain on Sunday, Hamilton (above) said: ‘It would mean the world to my family [to win an eighth title]. It would mean a lot to me knowing that, for example, I’m really proud of my family’s name: Hamilton

He continued: ‘Actually none of you might know that my mum’s [sur]name is Larbalestier. And I’m just about to put that in my name.

‘Because I don’t really fully understand the whole idea of why, when people get married, the woman loses her name. I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name.’

Asked whether it would be in time for this weekend, Hamilton added. ‘It will be soon. No, I don’t know if it will be this weekend. But we’re working on it.’

Born Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton, the driving ace grew up in the Hertfordshire town of Stevenage to parents Anthony and Carmen.

After Hamilton’s parents split when he aged two, he was raised by his mother until aged 12, when he moved to live with his father Anthony, stepmother Linda and half-brother Nicolas.
