Lidl axe attacker severed finger of shopper who tried to stop him with trolley

    A man wielding an axe in a Lidl supermarket caused a blood bath, severing a shopper's finger before turning the weapon on himself.

    The man, in his forties and wearing shorts and a T-shirt, with a backpack, was armed with an axe and two knives, which he used to chase shoppers around the store with, as reported by France 3.

    The axeman injured several people, two women aged 22 and 25, and two men aged 30 and 40 in the attack in Jeumont, France, on Monday night (December 12).

    One have-a-go hero severed his finger trying to stop the attacker with his shopping trolley.

    The man's wife posted on Facebook, showing a picture of him giving a thumbs up in a hospital bed.

    She said: "A big congratulations to my husband Tarik who dared to sacrifice himself to try to save strangers.

    "At the sight of an assailant armed with two machetes, having bloodied people in front of his eyes, he had the courage to take a cart (which was not his) to run over him and try to stop him by getting on his back.

    "And yes the courage you had moved me you didn't save yourself, you did what you could at the expense of taking a machete blow to your head and hands and losing a finger for life!

    "Your gesture surely allowed other people to save themselves for me you are a HERO Tarik Barnoussi.

    "I wish a good physical and psychological recovery to anyone who is concerned and anyone who has had similar and even worse trials…

    "And above all a big thank you to all the firefighters doctors nurses being present this day in Jeumont and in the hospitals."

    The assailant was was airlifted to Lille hospital after he turned the axe on himself, attempting to cut his throat and wrists.

    “I have never seen so much blood in my life," one witness told La Voix du Nord.

    Midilibre reported he had no ID on him and his fingerprints weren't on file. No motive has yet been disclosed.

    La Voix du Nord also reported the man was suffering from a schizophrenic episode at the time of the attack.

    "The supermarket team is very shocked," a manager in the store said. It "remains closed until further notice".

    Jeumont is located in France's Northern Department, close to the Belgian border in the country's northeast.
