Police searching for Madeleine McCann have locked off a reservoir in Portugal – and were "most likely" told where Christian Brueckner would dump a body by his criminal friends, according to a detective.
Officials from Portugal, Germany and the UK have all been at the Barragem do Arade reservoir this week – around 30miles from where the Leicestershire girl went missing in Praia da Luz in 2007.
Braunschweig prosecutor Christian Wolters said the case's first major search in nine years came following "certain tips", but did not give further details.

According to Julian Peribanez, a Barcelona-based detective who worked on a dive search of the same reservoir in 2008, German police were probably tipped off to where convicted sex offender Brueckner, 45, liked to camp out.
"They are choosing a very specific place where they think Christian Brueckner spent some time. Obviously, they think it could be the place where he could get rid of the body," he told RadarOnline.
Peribanez reckons it was Brueckner's criminal pals who tipped off the authorities.
He said: "The German police most likely got the testimony from Christian Brueckner’s friends who told them that he usually went to that certain place – and that he would spend days there.
"You can just imagine Christian Brueckner’s friends – they are petty criminals, thugs, drunks, and drug addicts – that’s the people he moved around with."
The Barragem do Arade reservoir is roughly 15mi from the village of Foral, where Brueckner lived in a run-down villa. It reaches depths of up to 150ft.
This week officers were seen using pickaxes to search the ground and combed through small rocks with rakes and spades.
Divers were seen taking to an inflatable boat on Tuesday morning. Searches appeared to be concentrated at one end of the reservoir.
The Sun reported the search was sparked following the discovery of photos and videos showing Brueckner near the reservoir.
The Times reported the focus of the hunt was Madeleine's pyjamas. They were pink and decorated with images of Eeyore from Winnie The Pooh.
Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell said: “The Met continues to work with and support colleagues in Portugal and Germany, with their investigations into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
“Met officers will be in Portugal and I am grateful to the Policia Judiciaria and Bundeskriminalamt for allowing us to be present whilst their work is ongoing, so that we can inform Madeleine’s family of any developments.”
It has been reported that Brueckner spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017. Brueckner has denied involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.
