Met Office weather warning: ‘Intense’ rain and lightning to batter Britain – latest alerts

Met Office weather forecasters have levelled another warning for thunderstorms over the UK today, as the country experiences its third successive day of heavy rain. While yesterday and Wednesday’s warnings coated the Midlands and southeast, on Friday the threat arises in Scotland.

The Met Office has warned thunderstorms will touch down on the west coast of Scotland around Glasgow.

The warning reads: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon and through the early evening, moving slowly northwest, before slowly fading overnight.

“The most intense rainfall is likely across parts of central Scotland during the early evening, and then across northwest Scotland.

“Whilst not all areas will see the heaviest rain, some places may see 30 to 40 mm in 1 to 2 hours which may lead to localised flooding. Lightning and hail are also likely.”

Today’s warning is in effect from 4pm today to 11.59pm, and encompasses most of Scotland’s west coast.

The Met Office has highlighted a selection of potential risks, including flooding and lightning strikes.

People may find it difficult to travel on the roads, with spray and additional flooding on coastal routes.

The Met Office added: “There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”
