‘Petty’ royals ‘planned Beatrice baby news for Harry and Meghan’s anniversary’
The date of the announcement that Princess Beatrice is expecting her first child with her multi-millionaire property developer husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi was not chosen at random, but selected to coincide with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s third wedding anniversary.
Or, at least, that’s what Australian-based royal correspondent Daniela Elser thinks.
The announcement was timed, Ms Elser thinks, partly as an act of revenge.
When Beatrice’s sister Princess Eugenie married in 2018 the occasion was reportedly overshadowed by Harry and Meghan’s announcement that they were pregnant with baby Archie.
According to Harry and Meghan biography Finding Freedom, that revelation “did not go down particularly well” with Eugenie, who “told friends she felt the couple should have waited to share the news”.
Similarly, Harry and Meghan’s shock announcement they were taking a step away from the Royal Family on January 8 last year, the day before Kate’s birthday.
And this year on Eugenie’s birthday, March 23, Harry announced his appointment as a Chief Impact Officer for US-based billion-dollar coaching and mental health firm BetterUp.
This is all, suggests Ms Elser, stretching coincidence a little too far.
All this may well just be a coincidence. But Beatrice and Edoardo’s announcement was not the only royal news that clashed with Harry and Meghan’s anniversary this week.
Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, are in Northern Ireland for a well-publicised royal tour, while Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, made a high-profile at the Victoria & Albert Museum for the opening of new Alice in Wonderland-themed exhibition Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser.
Her Majesty the Queen managed to fit in a couple of engagements too, albeit Zoom-based.
“So what are we to make of all this?” asks Ms Elser.
“Are we to believe that a current and future queen and the next king would do something quite so …. petty?”
Buckingham Palace has been approached for comment.
