Princess Diana ‘became convinced’ her butler was psychic and named him ‘Merlin’

    Princess Diana was convinced her butler Paul Burrell was psychic.

    The royal nicknamed him Merlin because he kept predicting what was going to happen to her.

    Paul, 64, told the Daily Star: “I probably shouldn’t tell you this… her nickname for me was Merlin.

    “She called me My Little Merlin. She said, ‘You know what’s going to happen next. You’ve got this sort of second sight. You know what’s going to happen.’”

    Paul and Diana were close pals for years while he was working at the Palace.

    He said: “I was very free and open with her. She knew me inside out.”

    Since Diana’s death in 1997, Paul has come out as gay and married partner Graham Cooper.

    And he is convinced she’d be thrilled to see how happy he is.

    He said: “I think she’d see that I’ve developed and blossomed into a completely different person, whom I hope she’ll be proud of.

    “She’d say, ‘Now you’ve got the courage of your convictions and you’re able to stand by yourself and be true to yourself’.

    “I hope that she’s looking down with our dear late Queen and having a giggle.”

    Paul opened up about his time with Diana while filming the new series of I’m A Celebrity, which starts on Monday at 9pm on ITV1.

    He said: “They’ve got a front row seat to be able to ask me a question. And very often we’d be sat around the campfire and with nothing else to do, everybody tells a story.”
