Queen’s ‘strict’ diet and eating quirks shared by former royal household chef

The Queen is not a fussy eater but only has organic fruit in season, her former private cook said.

Darren McGrady was the Queen's personal chef rom 1982 to 1993, also working as a cook for Princess Diana, Prince Harry and Prince William.

He led the kitchen during state visits by US Presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford and George Bushes Jr. and Sr and has now lifted the lid on what Her Majesty likes to eat.

Mr McGrady told the Today programme the Queen is a "thrifty" eater and "not a foodie".

But he said she does have particular rules for the sorts of fruit she will and won't eat, The Express reported.

The Queen apparently will only eat what is in season and organic. That means strawberries in summer, cranberries in winter.

And like her environmental enthusiast son Charles, Her Royal Highness does not eat genetically modified foods.

Darren said: “You can send strawberries every day to the Queen during summer at Balmoral and she’ll never say a word.

“Try including strawberries on the menu in January and she’ll scrub out the line and say don’t dare send me genetically modified strawberries.”

The Queen does have a favourite dish, but prefers to keep it a secret to avoid having it served on every royal visit, one insider revealed.

The former Telegraph royal correspondent Gordon Rayner wrote: "As one of her staff told me, ‘If she said she had a favourite meal she would never get served anything else.’"

McGrady also told Hello! that Her Majesty is served afternoon tea wherever in the world she is.

He explained: “She’d always have afternoon tea wherever she was in the world.

“We’d flown out to Australia and were on the Royal Yacht.

“It was five o’clock in the morning but for the Queen it was five in the afternoon so my first job was making scones.”

The Queen is also known to be a huge fan of scones with cream and jam and Earl Grey tea.
