Rare 100kmph ‘bomb cyclone’ rips rooftops from buildings in horrific video

The rare cyclone smashed into the north of the city of Florianopolis in the southern state of Santa Catarina on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction. Such is the power of the cyclone that winds reached 100kph (62mph) while there was also torrential rainfall. The devastating weather has caused 10 people to die across southern Brazil.

Katia Rodrigues, who uploaded one of the videos, told Newsflash she had never seen anything like it.

She added: “Because it’s an island here there are serious storms, but this was the first time I’ve seen something at that level.

“It ripped the roofs off several homes on the street, broke windows and the signage from the market fell.

“But here in my neighbourhood nobody was injured.”

Local media reported nine people were killed in Santa Catarina while one person tragically lost their life in Rio Grande do Sul.

A local resident told media: “We have never seen anything like it.

“We always believed we were far from the kind of phenomena we were used to seeing on television of the Caribbean.”

Meteorologist Marco Jusevicius, of the Parana Meteorological System, said: “The cyclone between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul caused intense atmospheric pressure and increased wind activity.

“Effectively, the phenomenon did not pass through Parana, but the state was impacted.”

A further 369,000 homes were left without electricity by the cyclone.

Authorities also said more than 1,000 others were forced to leave their homes.

The authorities are working to restore the power lines while President, Jair Bolsonaro said he would over the affected areas.

Meteorologists said Tuesday’s “extratropical bomb cyclone” originated in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The devastating cyclone comes as Brazil has struggled to contain the coronavirus.

At the time of writing, Brazil passed over 1.5 million cases.

There have also been 62,304 deaths as the virus continues to ravage the country.

Only the US has more cases than Brazil.

Health experts have criticised President Jair Bolsonaro who had dismissed the virus as mere flu.

On Friday, Bolsonaro vetoed parts of the law which would have made wearing a face mask obligatory in enclosed spaces.
