Red flag warning for fire danger posted south and east of Denver

Winds will be much calmer on Saturday in the metro area, but warmer, dry weather continues to raise wildfire concerns south and east of Denver along the Front Range and into the Eastern Plains.

In Denver, skies will be sunny and the high temperature will climb to about 67 degrees according to the National Weather Service. Winds will gust to about 16 mph.

Critical and elevated fire weather conditions are expected in a widespread area southeast of Denver to include Castle Rock, Colorado Springs, Limon, Cañon City, Pueblo and southeastern Colorado to the Kansas and New Mexico state lines. A red flag warning is posted by the National Weather Service for the South Park, the Palmer Divide and the adjacent plains south and east from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Winds are expected to gust to 35 mph and relative humidity will be around 10 to 20%.

Strong winds, up to 70 mph, are expected Saturday in the mountains and higher foothills, especially along exposed peaks, the weather service said. Extreme winds will continue into the night.

Tonight in Denver skies will be partly cloudy with a low temperature near 35 degrees, according to the weather service forecast. Winds could gust to about 18 mph.

On Sunday, wildfire concerns will continue along the Palmer Divide area because of gusty winds and low humidity.

In Denver on Sunday skies will be sunny and the high temperature will top out near 68 degrees. Winds could gust to 31 mph. Night skies will be partly cloudy, the low temp will be near 34 degrees and winds could gust to about 29 mph.

Monday in Denver skies will be mostly sunny, the high temp will be around 65 degrees and the winds will gust to about 34 mph.

A chance of snow returns to the mountains late Monday into Tuesday, the weather service said, and there’s a chance for rain or snow showers at lower elevations from Tuesday through Thursday.

Tuesday in Denver will be cold, with a high temperature of 39 degrees and a 60% chance of precipitation, likely snow showers.
