Sainsbury’s axing 3,500 jobs at Argos stores and supermarket counters

Sainsbury’s has confirmed plans to slash 3,500 jobs across its supermarket meat, fish and deli counters, as well as Argos stores.

The chain said roles will go as plans to immediately close 120 Argos stores, as it excels a strategy to shut 420 branches over the next three-and-a-half years.

Job losses are also expected in Sainsbury's stores, with a large number of roles expected to be cut in customer-facing roles made impossible by Covid-19.

The job losses are likely to be identified in the supermarket delicatessens and fresh fish and meat counters, it has been reported.

Chief Executive of Sainsbury’s, Simon Roberts, said the company will be talking to colleagues today and promised to find alternative roles where appropriate.

Mr Roberts said: "We are talking to colleagues today about where the changes we are announcing in Argos standalone stores and food counters impact their roles.

"We will work really hard to find alternative roles for as many of these colleagues as possible and expect to be able to offer alternative roles for the majority of impacted colleagues.

"Right here and now, I and all the team are focused on supporting and delivering for our customers in the days and weeks ahead."

The company reported the possibility of job losses back in April, claiming coronavirus had the potential to leave profits flat as it faced soaring costs for PPE.

Sainsbury's will be making a formal update to The City on Thursday November 5, but it is expected to say food sales are up with non-food sales and fuel down.

It comes as England prepares to go into a second lockdown, a move which Sainsbury's had said could impact the company greatly with a "longer-term hit to the wider economy."

The John Lewis Partnership, which owns John Lewis and Waitrose, was also forced to cut 1,500 roles by April 2021.

Earlier this year, JLP shut eight John Lewis stores, with the loss of 1,300 jobs and the closure of four Waitrose store which hit 124 jobs.

Sharon White, Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, said: "Our partnership plan sets a course to create a thriving and sustainable business for the future.

"To achieve this we must be agile and able to adapt quickly to the changing needs of our customers.

"Losing partners is incredibly hard as an employee-owned business.

"Wherever possible, we will seek to find new roles in the partnership and we'll provide the best support and retraining opportunities for partners who leave us."
