A Spanish bishop who quit the clergy to be with his sexologist lover has been accused of being ‘possessed’ after finding a new job exporting pig semen.
Xavier Novell, 52, announced three months ago that he was resigning from his post as Bishop of Solsona in Catalonia for ‘strictly personal reasons’.
He has since found work with Semen Cardona – a global company which makes and exports high-quality pig semen to more than 20 countries in Europe, America, Asia and Africa, reports Spanish media outlet ABC.
Ex-colleagues have reportedly condemned his switch in profession, with some clergymen believing he was ‘possessed by the devil’.
Novell first hit headlines in September after news site Religion Digital revealed he had fallen for 38-year-old Silvia Caballol, a divorced author of erotic novels.
The ex-bishop said he had ‘fallen in love’ and ‘wanted to do the right thing.’

A priest said to know Novell told Spanish media: ‘It’s like the Parable of the Prodigal Son in the Gospel of Luke, the son who abandoned the Father to lead a debaucherous life, and ended up wishing to eat pig slop.
‘But in this case it’s the beast/devil, because he masturbates them.’
On its website, Semen Cardona states: ‘We produce and distribute a highly specialised product, doses of porcine semen of the best genetics.’
It adds: ‘Spanish export leaders and one of the industry’s leading global referents, we distribute approximately 3million of doses annually.
‘Semen Cardona provides highly-valued services from the best European swine genetics companies and stallions of the highest quality, prolificacy and biosafety.’
The company, headquartered in Barcelona, has 19 artificial insemination centres (AICs) alongside international offices in Spain, Mexico and the Philippines.
A spokesperson told Spanish media that it is a private firm and cannot disclose information about workers due to data protection laws.
Novell is reported to have met Caballol, a psychologist who has studied sexology, yoga, Catholicism and Islam, after he began studying demonology.
Caballol writes novels featuring characters ‘possessed by the demon of lust’ – a fact which has raised eyebrows among Novell’s former colleagues.
Her books are described by her publisher as turning ‘all our moral and ethical considerations upside down.’
The Hell in Gabriel’s Lust, Caballol’s most recent book, promises ‘prisons, psychopathy, sects, sadism, madness, lust and, little by little, as the story progresses… the unreality of immortality and the crude struggle between good and evil, between God and Satan, and between angels and demons.’
But Novell is likely no stranger to the demonic, having been among the handful of Spanish bishops to decline having an exorcist appointed in 2015, opting instead to perform the role himself.

Novell had been seen as a star on the rise within Spain’s Catholic church after being appointed as the country’s youngest bishop in 2010 when he was just 41.
However his ascent stalled, The Times reported, with the election of Pope Francis in 2013.
Francis has edged the Vatican towards more liberal stances than those espoused by his traditionalist predecessor Pope Benedict XVI.
Novell, who has defended gay conversion therapy and described abortion and euthanasia as ‘genocide’, is out of step with the mood of the church under Francis.
His resignation was accepted by the Pope and the church has not commented.
Novell also set himself apart as the only bishop to openly vote in the 2017 controversial Catalan independence referendum illegal under Spanish law.
MailOnline has reached out to Semen Cardona for further comment.
