Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are reported to have split from the Royal Family after this picture was the “final straw”.

Harry and Meghan sensationally announced they were quitting the firm as “senior” Royals with plans to take up a “progressive new role”.

It has been reported however that this picture of The Queen , Prince William, Prince Charles and Prince George may have been the “final straw” for the Sussexes.

Insiders have alleged that the portrait was seen as a message to Meghan and Harry that they are not part of the future of the Royals.

Rumours have raged for months about tensions between the Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Family, and reportedly The Queen is even more angry now than she was over Prince Andrew .

Meghan and Harry reportedly did not brief the Palace about last night’s announcement as discussions over their future were confirmed to be in there “early stages”.

Celebrating the new decade, The Queen released the portrait of her and the next three kings – Charles, his son Wills and his grandson George.

It was said to be a celebratory image, with the 93-year-old beaming in a white dress in the centre of the frame.

The photograph was taken by Ranald Mackechnie, who was also responsible for the only other portrait of the four royals together.

The last snap was released in 2016 to mark the Queen's 90th birthday and was printed on commemorative stamps.

However, this latest image is alleged to have not sat well with Harry and Meghan.

“That picture was the clearest indication that Harry and Meghan are not considered part of the future of the institution,” an insider told The Sun.

“From their point of view from that moment on there was no point hanging around.”

Harry and Meghan are planning to keep Frogmore Cottage – with The Queen expected to demand rent – and split their time between the UK and North America.

The couple have pledged to become “financially independent”, but will still have taxpayer funded security protecting them.

It is unclear if the couple will also give up their HRH titles as questions remain over their longterm future among the Royals.

The Queen is reportedly “deeply upset” with Harry and Meghan’s decision to leave the Royals.

And meanwhile, Prince Charles and Prince William are said to be “incandescent with rage”.

The couple reportedly failed to consult the Royals about their plans before making the announcement on social media.

Insiders have alleged the statement “breaks all protocol” and in a “declaration of war”.

Meghan and Harry have said however they will “fully support” The Queen despite wanting to take a different approach to life in the limelight.

Harry and Meghan’s decision has come at the end of a long road for the couple who have been seen as drifting away from the Royals.

The Duke of Duchess of Sussex have just returned from Canada after deciding to spend Christmas away from the rest of the Royals.

Harry also previously admitted he was on a “different path” than brother William amid rumours about a rift between Sussexes and the Cambridges.

In the statement announcing the departure, Harry and Meghan said they plan to "carve out a progressive new role within this institution".

It is understood Harry and Meghan had just begun talks with the Queen and Charles about their future roles when they made their decision to go public.

The head of state and her son were only recently informed of the Sussexes intention to explore their public positions as members of the monarchy, and were not aware the statement was due to be issued.

The mood at Buckingham Palace is understood to be one of disappointment while the BBC has reported that senior royals have been "hurt" by the announcement.

The sequence of events is likely to lead commentators to speculate whether a rift has developed at the heart of the monarchy.

It is likely they will be spending their time in the Canada when not in the UK and may travel to US, Meghan's homeland and where her mother lives.

Any move to Canada, even for a period of the year, would throw up important questions about Meghan and Harry's long-term future within the Royal Family.

Meghan, a former actress, lived and worked in Toronto during her time starring in the popular US drama Suits.

And the couple were famously pictured together when Meghan joined her then-boyfriend Harry at the 2017 Invictus Games.

Harry is believed to have a personal fortune of around £30million, and Meghan is also believed to be wealthy from her career as an actress.

The Duke is also believed to have access to around £14million left to him by The Queen Mother.

Harry and William also inherited around 75% of the £21million left by their late mum Princess Diana.

It has been suggested they could use book deals, appearances and speeches to pad out their wealth.

Aides have said they expect them to make “a lot of money” as they step back from the Royals.

Graham Smith from the organisation Republic, which campaigns for an elected head of state, said about Harry and Meghan's decision: "This really is wanting to have your cake and eat it.

“They have said they will dip in and out of royal duties as it suits them but won't stop taking public money until they find other sources of income.
