Woman mortified as live maggot drops out of Cadbury’s Brunch Bar
A woman has been left “disgusted” after opening a Cadbury’s Brunch Bar – only for a live maggot to drop out.
Emma Hutton, 29, luckily noticed the unwelcome creature just before she took a bite.
She shared a video to Hull Live of the maggot crawling away from the snack on her desk.
The bar itself was covered in eggs and webbing, which looked at first glance as crumbs.
“I was about to bite into one and noticed something on it,” Emma, who lives in Hull, said.
“I couldn’t make out what it was and asked my manager ‘does it look like a maggot to you’.
“I put it on Facebook and my mum checked the rest of pack and she said they were all the same.”
Emma’s mum had bought the Brunch Bar as a pack of six from Asda, who are not being blamed for the incident.
She says the box was not damaged and fully sealed with all the bars in date.
“It makes me think that something like a fly has laid its egg into the mixture,” she continued. “It was disgusting.
“I was just broken. I didn’t know what to do. I ran to the side of the room.
“If I had not looked before taking a bite I would have eaten it.”
Emma contacted Cadbury’s and was asked to send pictures of the bars so the company could investigate it further.
She then received a “generic sorry email” and a £10 voucher as a goodwill gesture.
While the Asda in Hessle Road were not blamed for the incident, they sent her a £15 voucher after being informed of what happened.
“I won’t buy the Brunch Bars again,” Emma added. “It has put me off for life.
“Everyone I have told at work said they will never eat them again.
“They were quite camouflaged on the bar and they don’t jump out at you straight away.”
A Cadbury’s spokesperson apologized for the incident but said it was an isolated case.
“We are very sorry to hear about Emma’s experience and have contacted her to apologise,” they said.
“We have stringent quality checks and processes in place across all of our manufacturing operations and all our sites are routinely inspected on a regular basis.
“After a thorough investigation we believe this is an isolated case. We have written to the customer and offered a goodwill gesture including a hamper of Cadbury products, which they have accepted.”
