World’s oldest dog ever who is almost 31 was lucky to dodge death as a puppy

The oldest dog ever is lucky to be alive after a near-death experience when he was just a pup.

Bobi has been officially recognised as the oldest living pooch to walk the Earth since records began, taking the title comfortably.

Almost 31, the elderly doggo was nearly put down by the parents of his owners when he was born.

One of four, the litter was to be killed, but Bobi wandered off and missed the culling.

Speaking to Guinness World Records, Leonel Costa, now 38-years-old, said: "I was eight years old.

"My father was a hunter, and we always had many dogs.”

But it was deemed that the latest litter was one too many, and they couldn’t keep them as they already had too many animals.

Leo and his brothers kept AWOL Bobi a secret after the rest of the litter was killed.

"We knew that when the dog opened its eyes, my parents would no longer [put him down]," he said.

They hid little Bob for a fortnight until finally, his eyes opened.

"It was popular knowledge [in Portugal] that this act could not or should be done."

Leo got in trouble for the act, but added: “It was worth it and for a good reason."

The purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo – a Portuguese farm dog – has massively outstripped dogs of the same breed, most living for between 12 and 14 years.

The farm dog is technically a double honours winner – he’s both the oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever.

The historic hound is, as of February 3, 2023, 30 years and 268 days old, ripping up the previously held record belonging to Bluey, an Australian cattle dog who lived to be 29 years five months old.

From Portugal, he tends to hang out, Conqueiros in Portugal, at the farm his family owns.
