Young man in his 20s found dead on M1 after being struck by ‘multiple vehicles’

A young man was found dead on the M1 after being mowed down by several vehicles.

Police have confirmed that an incident on Friday night which drew the motorway in Yorkshire to a standstill, resulted in a tragic fatality.

The road was shut down in both directions between junction 38 in Huddersfield and Wakefield's junction 39 as emergency services responded to the incident.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police explained on Saturday that a man in his 20s was killed after being hit by several vehicles, YorkshireLive reports.

The force has asked all motorists who witnessed the incident near Woolley Edge Services at around 8.45pm on Friday night, to come forward.

Officers had been called to reports of a man lying on the southbound carriageway, who they tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police are appealing for witnesses following a road traffic collision on the M1 which resulted in a male pedestrian suffering fatal injuries after colliding with several vehicles.

"Officers were called to attend at the southbound carriageway of the motorway, between junctions 38 and 39, near Woolley Edge Services, following reports of a body in the road at around 8:45pm last night (Friday, December 17).

"The road was closed and emergency services attended to the scene where, sadly, it was confirmed that the male had died.

"There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances relating to the death. The road was re-opened by 3:45am."

It is believed that the man may have been in Bramley Lane near the motorway before the crash and anyone who saw him is asked to get in touch.
