It’s been a tough year for politicians, and now they’re finishing 2022 as the butt of Christmas cracker jokes.

Gags about government U-turns and the cost of living crisis dominate a top ten of the funniest cracker jokes.

The list was compiled by TV channel Gold, with 2,000 members of the public voting on the top ten. This year’s No 1 was: ‘What type of peas ruin Christmas dinner? MPs.’

Claire Travers Smith, the author of the winning joke, won £1,500. Comedy critic Bruce Dessau said the jokes ‘proved once again that we’re a nation with an unrelenting sense of humour’.

What do people heating their homes and wrapping paper have in common? Both of them are getting ripped off.

Topical stories from the last 12 months provided ammunition for the annual competition with gags maiming This Morning duo Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield over their alleged queue jumping and Will Smith for his Oscars slap making the top ten.

The final list was decided by comedy critic Bruce Dessau from entries on Twitter.

Dessau said: ‘After another year of ups and downs the British public has delivered the laughs, with this year’s modern Christmas cracker jokes covering topics from the rising cost of living to queue-jumping presenters and politicians performing U-turns. Proving that once again we’re a nation with an unrelenting sense of humour!’

Claire Travers Smith, the author of the winning joke, won £1,500 towards a holiday, a festive hamper and a box of bespoke Gold Christmas Crackers containing her gag.
