The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies star Rebekah Stanton explained why she didn’t speak to real-life victims of con artists as she opened up about her role in the BBC thriller.

This drama tells the story of two very different women, Alice Newman (played by Rebekah Stanton) and Cheryl Harker (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) and the conman, Dr Rob Chance (Alistair Petrie), that they have in common.

Cheryl is a bestselling fantasy fiction author who, after being recently bereaved, now lives alone with her poodle, Goblin.

Alice is a formidable but long-underestimated PA who lives in a bungalow with her young son and partner.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Rebekah touched on the subject of real-life con victims and explained why she herself didn’t speak to any while researching the role.

That’s what she takes into her journey that as a woman, people are going to look at her and think she is mad.

“There’s a lot of doubt, so I think female viewers are possibly going to relate to that and I do think it will trigger the question in people: ‘will she be believed?’ I think that’s relatable.”

The Following Events are Based on a Pack of Lies will launch with weekly episodes on BBC One from August 29.
