A pilot who crashed a plane in the Amazon rainforest last year and was found alive after 13 days has now died – in a second Amazon plane crash.

Otavio Augusto Munhoz da Silva's plane went missing over the Amazon on August 28. His sister reported him missing to authorities on September 1.

A huge search effort was launched but sadly the 38-year-old was found dead alongside the destroyed aircraft in Mucajai, northern Brazil.

An autopsy was carried out before his body was given back to the family on September 2. He will be buried in his hometown of Londrina, a city in southern Brazil.

Otavio's family said he worked as a private air taxi driver, often travelling over the dense Amazon rainforest.

Police will now investigate the cause of this latest crash.

The crash this year came almost exactly 11 months on from when he last went missing.

He went down in another plane in the Amazon on September 27, 2022. He was considered missing by authorities but 13 days later a walker miraculously stumbled across him alive. Otavio had been walking that entire time in search of help.

Brazil's Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Centre said at the time: "The aircraft was located in a dense forest area near the Mucajai River.

"The aircraft was destroyed and showed signs of intentional fire."

Otavio's mother Maria Lucia Munhoz Silva said at the time: "I remained confident that he could survive. I knew he would endure because he used to carry a bag with medications and food. But the prayers sustained my son.

"I don't even know the extent of how many people prayed for him. I am relieved, very happy with this news."
