FORMER Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster has recalled the exact moment he decided to retire.

The 40-year-old hung up his gloves last month, just four games into the League Two season.

Foster announced his decision to call it quits following Wrexham's thrilling 5-5 draw with Swindon Town.

And he has since pinpointed the moment that he knew it was time to retire.

Speaking on his Fozcast YouTube channel, Foster revealed that Dan Kemp's goal – which put Swindon 3-1 ahead – prompted the moment of realisation.

He said: "Back in the day when I was playing, in my mid-30s, I would have looked back at them and gone 'should have done better there, I know I could have done better there.'

"These goals were going in and I'm thinking, 'I couldn't have done any better there because I couldn't move any quicker.'

"There was one, in that final game I played against Swindon. The guy got it out of his feet and he took a shot from about 22 yards and he bent it round into the corner.

"As he got the ball out of his feet, normally what happens is I know he's putting it in the corner to my right-hand side. I know it, I can read it like a book.

"I couldn't even read it like a book. Honestly, it is mad, I can't explain it to you.

I couldn't read it. I knew he was putting it in the corner but I didn't get the little steps in to make sure I knew I could save it."

Foster went on to add: "I am 40 years old and I can't do the things that I used to do. These goals are going in on a Saturday afternoon and I'm thinking, 'boys, you deserve better than this.'

"I was thinking I am letting the team down here. Goals going in, they're massive in games, they can take momentum away, they can give momentum, change the course of every game, just one goal going in out of nowhere.

"There were five goals [out of 13 conceded in four games] I could have done better with but that game against Swindon was the day I decided I was going to do this."

The former goalkeeper initially retired last September after leaving Watford as a free agent.

However, he returned to the pitch in March to sign a short-term deal with Wrexham.

Foster went on to help the Red Dragons achieve promotion back to the Football League for the first time in 15 years.

Tearful Antony says he does not fear for Man U future despite abuse claims
