Former Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, who was labelled a ‘serial bully’ by an independent inquiry, has been picked up as a contestant on series two of the US version of The Traitors.

The 60-year-old ex-MP follows in the steps of Matt Hancock by making the leap from politics to reality TV as a contestant on the show, which is hosted by Alan Cumming.

Mr Hancock, who is still MP for West Suffolk, appeared on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here in 2022 and is shortly set to appear in the celebrity version of SAS: Who Dares Wins on Channel 4.

But the appearance could be awkward for former Buckingham MP Mr Bercow, who was banned from holding a parliamentary pass after an investigation found that he ‘repeatedly and extensively’ bullied staff in the Commons.

He is set to appear alongside a variety of other UK and US celebrities in a line-up that also features Ekin-Su Culculoglu, from Love Island, Ru Paul’s Drag Race drag queen Peppermint and American Big Brother contestant Dan Gheesling.

The British edition is hosted by Claudia Winkleman and has also been renewed for a second series.

The news of his role in the show drew a rapid rebuke from Number 10, with Rishi Sunak’s spokesman saying the Prime Minister believes MPs should be ‘working hard for their constituents’ at a ‘challenging time for the country’.

Chief Whip Simon Hart announced he had removed the whip from Mr Hancock – the same fate that befell fellow Tory MP Nadine Dorries when she went on the ITV show in 2012.
