The final moments of Emily Jackson before she was murdered by the Yorkshire Ripper have been presented in ITV drama The Long Shadow.

The series, which details the police investigation into the 13 murders carried out by Peter Sutcliffe in his campaign of terror between 1975 and 1980, focuses on the victims of his heinous crimes.

The first episode of the seven-part series, which was released tonight, followed the tragic final days Wilma McCann and Emily Jackson – Sutcliffe’s first two victims who were brutally murdered in 1975 and 1976.

In the episode Emily is seen dancing at a bar with someone who looks like Sutcliffe before getting into a car that could have been driven by the murderer.

The show has come in for criticism from the families of the serial killer’s victims over alleged inaccuracies, although it was praised by some for dropping the murderer’s moniker from the title.

The first episode shows a man who looks like Peter Sutcliffe dancing with Emily Jackson at a bar

In the show the man is seen asking Emily ‘how much’, a reference to prostitution that she doesn’t take well

After turning to sex work, Emily is then shown getting into a vehicle that could be Sutcliffe’s at the end of the episode

The episode opens with the discovery of Wilma’s body before moving onto the months afterwards, focusing on Emily’s family life and the police probe into Wilma’s murder.

In the show Emily, who was portrayed by Katherine Kelly, is shown having a drink at a bar after going out with her husband Sydney Jackson, played by Daniel May.

While there she is shown as catching the eye of a man who looks like Sutcliffe, with the pair dancing together.

He later follows her away from the dance floor, before asking ‘How does it work then? Have you got a place where we can go? How much?’, a reference to prostitution.

Later she is shown turning to part-time sex work in a bid to alleviate her family’s financial problems in the lead up to Christmas in 1975, allowing her to buy presents for her children.

The first episode culminates with Emily going out on the night she was murdered, with her leaving the house after a fight with Sydney and vowing it could be the last night she does sex work.

After going to a road frequented by other sex workers, a Land Rover pulls up waiting for a woman to get in.

Emily is seen asking another woman why she doesn’t go to the car, who responds saying he’s a regular and she’s ‘not so keen on him’.

The 42-year-old then walks over to the window and after a short conversation gets into the vehicle, before later being dropped off with money in her hand.

Another car soon arrives, and after asking how much, she gets inside before it drives away to an ominous soundtrack, with the show appearing to suggest it was Sutcliffe’s vehicle.

The producers of the show have said how they were not keen to show the murders themselves, instead saying they wanted to focus on the lives of those who were killed and the impact on their families.

Sutcliffe murdered Emily after picking her up outside the Gaiety pub on Roundhay Road, where she was soliciting for business.

After Emily had told him an encounter would cost £5, he drove on Roundhay Road to a derelict patch of land.

He then stopped his car and pretended it wouldn’t start.

As she tried to help him by holding her lighter while he looked under the bonnet, he battered her twice with a hammer.

He then dragged her body into a yard and used a screwdriver to viciously stab her.

Her body was found on nearby Manor Street by a workman on the morning of January 21.

Sutcliffe would later tell police: ‘At that time I had a feeling of satisfaction and justification for what I’d done.

‘I found that I didn’t have any blood on my clothes which I could see, so I had no need to dispose of them.’

As the first episode aired the son of the Yorkshire Ripper’s first victim Wilma McCann paid tribute to her, saying he was thinking of her ‘more than ever’.

Tweeting just minutes before the programme aired, Richard McCann said: ‘Not sure why I feel so nervous about the airing of the ITV drama The Long Shadow starting in a few minutes.

‘Thinking of you mum more than I ever have for years as people get to see you showing love for your children.’

Wilma, who was a mother-of-four, was brutally murdered just 100 yards away from her house on October 30, 1975, after Sutcliffe hit her with a hammer and stabbed her 15 times in the chest, neck and abdomen.

The murder of Wilma, who was a sex worker and was portrayed in the show by Gemma Laurie, came after Sutcliffe had attacked three women that same year.

The women – Anna Rogulskyj, Olive Smelt and Tracy Browne – had all miraculously escaped with their lives.

On the night of October 29, McCann had said goodnight to her children and then headed out drinking.

She was seen at four pubs – including the Regent and White Sawn – drinking whiskies an beer.

Later in the evening, she ended up at a drinking club, where she continued consuming alcohol.

Having left the club very drunk after 1am, she staggered around looking for a lift home and was seen by Sutcliffe, who stopped his car and picked her up.

He parked his car near Prince Philip Playing fields and, after suggesting that they have sex on the grass, attacked and killed her.
