It’s known for its shock moments, and Antiques Roadshow expert Grant Ford rendered a contestant speechless after he revealed her painting was worth more than she could have ever imagined.<\/p>\n
On the show’s recent trip to\u00a0Powis Castle and Garden in Wales, they uncovered an incredibly valuable painting, despite the fact the it was bought for just \u00a325.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Purchased from a charity shop, the guest couldn’t believe she was in possession of such a valuable painting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The colourful painting depicted an interesting Scottish scene and it blew the expert away as he revealed the artwork was worth between \u00a34000 and \u00a36000.\u00a0<\/p>\n The valuation rendered the guest stunned as she exclaimed: ‘Oh, wow! That\u2019s quite astonishing. For \u00a325, I\u2019m glad I bought it.’<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Wow: An Antiques Roadshow contestant was rendered speechless when she learned that a cheap painting was worth a fortune<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Work of art: On the show’s recent trip to Powis Castle and Garden in Wales, they uncovered an incredibly valuable painting, despite the fact the it was bought for just \u00a325<\/p>\n The guest came across the painting by complete chance while she was travelling back from a holiday in the Scottish Highlands with her children.\u00a0<\/p>\n Her and her family were driving back to their home in Shropshire and had stopped for a quick walk to break up the journey.\u00a0<\/p>\n It began to pour down with torrential rain, and seeking shelter she ran to the nearest charity shop with her children.\u00a0<\/p>\n It was there she found the painting, as she told Grant:\u00a0‘I didn\u2019t get a raincoat, I got a painting.’<\/span><\/p>\n Joking, Grant replied: ‘Gosh, I wish I was there before you.’<\/span><\/p>\n After analysing the piece, the expert concluded that the<\/span>\u00a0oil-on-canvas was a ‘Confident colourist’ style.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Signed ‘Cunningham’ in the lower right corner, it was revealed that the artist was John Cunningham.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n He was a Glasgow artist born in 1926 who was born and bred in Lanarkshire but then went on to study at Glasgow School of Art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Taken aback! The guest was blown away when expert Grant Ford revealed the artwork was worth between \u00a34000 and \u00a36000<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Delighted:\u00a0The valuation rendered the guest stunned as she exclaimed: ‘Oh, wow! That\u2019s quite astonishing. For \u00a325, I\u2019m glad I bought it’<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Blown away:\u00a0‘You could have found a raincoat that day; luckily you found a brilliant painting,’ joked Grant\u00a0<\/p>\n Grant explained: ‘<\/span>He taught a great deal, and then when he retired from the Glasgow School of Art as a teacher and a senior lecturer, he became a sort of professional artist in 1985.’\u00a0<\/p>\n The guest paid \u00a325 for the painting ten years ago, but Grant could confidently reveal that it is now worth \u00a34000 to \u00a36000.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘I just think that\u2019s an amazing piece of luck because this is a very sought-after painting. And actually, it holds quite a lot of value,’ he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘You could have found a raincoat that day; luckily you found a brilliant painting.’<\/p>\n
