{"id":87713,"date":"2023-11-15T23:29:07","date_gmt":"2023-11-15T23:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebritytidings.com\/?p=87713"},"modified":"2023-11-15T23:29:07","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T23:29:07","slug":"matt-petgrave-given-standing-ovation-by-sheffield-steelers-fans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebritytidings.com\/sport\/matt-petgrave-given-standing-ovation-by-sheffield-steelers-fans\/","title":{"rendered":"Matt Petgrave given standing ovation by Sheffield Steelers fans"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Ice hockey star Matt Petgrave is given a standing ovation by 8,000 fans as he misses his team&#8217;s first game since his deadly collision with Adam Johnson<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Matt Petgrave was given a standing ovation by fans on Sunday afternoon<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It came after the ice hockey star&#8217;s skate had fatally cut Adam Johnson&#8217;s neck\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Members of the ice hockey community have since rallied around Petgrave\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sheffield Steelers Ice hockey star Matt Petgrave has been given a standing ovation by fans at the Utilita Arena Sheffield after he was involved in a deadly collision with Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson\u00a0on October 28.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It came as the Steelers returned to the ice for their first home game since Johnson tragically passed away, after Petgrave&#8217;s skate had fatally cut his opponent&#8217;s neck during their Challenge Cup tie.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Johnson had stood up following the collision, but blood began to profusely fall onto the ice before the 29-year-old collapsed again.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In tribute to the Panthers player, more than 8,000 fans observed a moment of silence and a rapturous minute&#8217;s applause as players tapped their sticks on the ice ahead of the Steelers&#8217; 2-1 win against Coventry Blaze on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Petgrave was not included in the Steelers&#8217; squad to play on the night, but before the match, his picture appeared on the big screen inside the arena, with many fans rising to their feet to applaud the image of the defender.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/13\/14\/77369195-12743383-Johnson_previously_played_for_the_Pittsburgh_Penguins_in_the_NHL-a-35_1699885291061.jpg\" height=\"433\" width=\"306\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/13\/14\/77369179-12743383-Petgrave_played_in_Canada_and_the_United_States_before_taking_hi-a-37_1699885291103.jpg\" height=\"433\" width=\"306\"><\/p>\n<p>Adam Johnson&#8217;s (left) neck was cut open in a collision with Matt Petgrave (right)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/13\/14\/77737863-12743383-image-a-38_1699885332658.jpg\" height=\"1059\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Sheffield Steelers returned to action at home on Sunday for the first time since the incident with fans giving Petgrave a standing ovation after an image of him appeared on the big screen<\/p>\n<p>South Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation into the &#8216;tragic and unprecedented&#8217; death of Johnson\u00a0stating that due to the &#8216;complex nature&#8217; of the incident, a &#8216;wider investigation will take some time.&#8217;\u00a0<span>Police had also referred to the incident as a <\/span>&#8216;freak accident&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The Steelers defender, meanwhile, has not publicly been seen since the incident, but according to reports had been left &#8216;absolutely distraught&#8217; and had also received &#8216;vile messages&#8217; from trolls on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Petgrave, 31, began his career with the Bramalea Blues in the Ontario Junior Hockey League in Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 6ft 1in defenseman would later join Niagara IceDogs in the Ontario Hockey League. We are a big family and he can contact us if he needs it. I was a couple of metres away, so if anyone experienced it as it really was, then it was me.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Johnson&#8217;s aunt has also called for a &#8216;full investigation&#8217; into what she described as a &#8216;reckless&#8217; incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It was very reckless,&#8217; she told YorkshireLive. &#8216;I just want them to get it right.
