Carter III &#8211; aka &#8216;Chip&#8217; &#8211; the family was initially together as his father &#8211; who has also been in hospice care &#8211; gave a final wish.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;My Dad told her he loved her and thanked her for all the wonderful things she had done,&#8217; Carter said. &#8216;Then he asked us to leave so he could be alone with her.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From there, the Carters sat alone together, holding hands for at least a half-hour, Chip said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/24\/01\/78179553-12785515-image-a-10_1700788487495.jpg\" height=\"427\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Former President Jimmy Carter spent the last moments of wife Rossalyn Carter&#8217;s life the way they&#8217;d spent most of their 77-year marriage : together and holding hands<\/p>\n<p>The Carters were placed feet-to-feet at each other&#8217;s hospital beds Saturday night, so they could face one another and talk.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, when Rossalyn awoke Sunday morning, she could no longer speak and was pronounced dead at 2:10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Tears were coming out of his eyes,&#8217; Chip Carter told the Washington Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Dad told me several times over the last nine months that he had always thought he would outlive Mom and protect her until she passed, but that now he wasn&#8217;t sure that was going to happen &#8211; and that upset him,&#8217; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;But he stayed alive. The 20-year-old Jimmy was attending the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, and stole a kiss from Rosalynn on their first date. I remember that vividly.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In a poem from his 1995 book &#8216;Always a Reckoning,&#8217; Jimmy recalled that first date at the movies, writing: &#8216;I&#8217;d pay to sit behind her, blind to what was on the screen, and watch the image flicker on her hair.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t take long for the love-struck 20-year-old to determine that Rosalynn was a keeper and he proposed. And sometimes they change the initials and make you guess what they&#8217;re talking about.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Just weeks before Jimmy graduated from the Naval academy, Jimmy and Rosalynn tied the knot on July 7, 1946, at Plains Methodist Church in their hometown.<\/p>\n<p>The newlyweds moved to Norfolk, Virginia, shortly after their nuptials for the first of many Naval assignments that saw the Carters posted in California, Hawaii, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>Jimmy and Rosalynn had four children, and 25 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 2018, their grandson Jeremy died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 28.<\/p>\n<p>They welcomed their first child John &#8216;Jack&#8217; William Carter on July 3, 1947, in Portsmouth, Virginia. He would take my advice about things.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Jimmy was elected to the Georgia State Senate on November 5, 1962, following an unsuccessful run for U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n<p>He credited Rosalynn, who campaigned tirelessly for him, for the political successes and told Associated Press: &#8216;My wife is much more political.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He won the Georgia state governor election on November 3, 1970, and upon his inauguration, Rosalynn began her work on destigmatizing mental illness as the state&#8217;s first lady.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Jimmy gave me the confidence to do things I was afraid of,&#8217; Rosalynn said of her time as Georgia&#8217;s first lady to People.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I remember when we were in the Georgia governor&#8217;s mansion, I used to greet tourists and talk to everybody who came through.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;One day, Jimmy told me I was going to have to make a speech. I was so nervous, and he said, &#8216;Why don&#8217;t you just do what you do at the governor&#8217;s mansion when you&#8217;re talking to the tourists?&#8217; So I made the speech with no problem, ran to the telephone and called Jimmy to say, &#8216;I did it!&#8217; I did it because I had to do it.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Jimmy won the U.S. presidential election on November 2, 1976, thanks in part to Rosalynn&#8217;s determined campaign strategy, visiting 40 states and earning her the title of Jimmy&#8217;s &#8216;secret weapon.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In 1976, she told People that she preferred campaigning solo for Jimmy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We can reach twice as many people this way,&#8217; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;ve made as many as 12 speeches a day in one community. I enjoy it. But sometimes I want to stop and wash my hair.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Rosalynn was devastated when Jimmy lost his re-election campaign to Ronald Reagan on November 4, 1980, with Jimmy recalling that she actually took the defeat harder than he did.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I searched for good things about not being re-elected, to ease her pain,&#8217; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I was just 56 years old, I told her, and she was just 53, so we had at least 25 years of life ahead of us. That&#8217;s when The Carter Center was born. It has been a wonderful challenge.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In 1984, Jimmy and Rosalynn, who&#8217;d previously worked with Habitat for Humanity in Georgia, rounded up volunteers for the New York chapter of the organization and went on to build houses all around the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>It was their different passions, Rosalynn told People, that ensured their love lasted decades.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;d say space [is the secret to a lasting marriage]. One of the hardest times was when we came home from the White House,&#8217; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It was the first time we&#8217;d been together in the house all day every day.
