The Met Office has issued three new snow and ice weather warnings for the UK, covering hundreds of miles across nearly every home nation.

Britons awoke to snow and ice for the first time in late 2023 this week, with pictures showing scatterings across Scotland and northern England in the morning on Wednesday, November 29. The scenes, unusual for November, have captivated people, creating stunning backdrops as the world enters December and the countdown to Christmas begins.

But they come with a host of potential hazards, including icy patches that forecasters expect could cause injuries. Those risks extend throughout the UK for the next 24 hours, the Met Office has said.

Warning maps issued by the agency extend from the very tip of Scotland to the heart of Cornwall. The forecasters have placed a warning for snow and ice as far north as Scotland’s Shetland Isles.

The warning runs from Haroldswick, one of Scotland’s most northerly settlements, down the east coast to Essex, while a second inside that covers slightly further inland to cities like York, Lincoln and Leeds.

From approximately the Humber northwards, showers will often fall as snow inland, with up to 2cm possible in places and perhaps as much as 5 cm over high ground. Further south, any snow accumulations are more likely to be restricted to higher ground.”

A similar snow and ice warning is in place for Cornwall, with areas between Salisbury and Bodmin included in the vast alert.

Don’t miss…
