Family members of a British woman murdered at her Italian dream home have visited the scene for the first time.

Grandmother Michele Faiers, 66, was found stabbed to death by a friend who called round after she was unable to reach her for three days.

A postmortem later revealed she had nine knife wounds mainly to her back and was dressed just in her underwear and covered with a sheet on the floor of her bedroom.

The murder happened in late October in the picturesque hilltop town of Casoli, near Chieti, on the Adriatic Coast.

Three days after she is believed to have died Michele’s partner Michael Whitbread, 74, was arrested by British police and is currently awaiting extradition to Italy.

Local TV captured two of Michele’s three daughters, Harriet, 38, and Sarah, 27, as they were seen entering the remote farmhouse where their mother died accompanied by their lawyer.

Both women wore black hoodies and were also with a British Embassy official as they spent two hours inside the house gathering personal items and being shown around.

As they left with their lawyer they covered their faces and declined to speak to waiting journalists.

Last month MailOnline revealed that Michele had rowed with Whitbread after suspecting he was having an affair with another British expat who lived in the area.

Court documents seen by MailOnline also revealed how she had slept at a friend’s house three weeks before she died after he allegedly attacked her.

Besides the stab wounds, an autopsy also revealed Michele had injuries to her hands, allegedly from trying to fight Whitbread.

Two knives were found at the scene following a search by forensic teams and these are being examined by police as well as material found under her nails.

Lawyer Massimiliano Sichetti is defending the interests of Michele and her family and said: ‘They just wanted to come and see for themselves where their mother died.

‘The house had been impounded by the police and prosecutor but that order has now been removed and they were allowed to enter and gather effects.’

Former diving instructor Whitbread is due in court again on Thursday at Westminster Magistrates for his next extradition hearing.
