A dermatologist has revealed how to properly clean your makeup sponge by using a common cooking ingredient.

The video was made by Dr. Azadeh Shirazi, a board-certified dermatologist who is based in San Diego, California, and specializes in medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology.

Dr. Shirazi, who boasts nearly two million followers on TikTok, is also the founder of her own medical-grade skincare line, AziMD Skincare.

In the video clip, which was posted over the summer, Dr. Shirazi revealed that the ‘secret sauce’ for cleaning a makeup sponge was actually olive oil.

Dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi revealed the ‘secret sauce’ for cleaning a makeup sponge on her TikTok account

She explained exactly how you should be cleaning the sponge, and told viewers why it was important to keep it spotless

In the video, Dr. Shirazi compared two different methods of cleaning a makeup sponge

‘Let’s check out the best way to clean your Beautyblenders, which should be cleansed after every use,’ Dr. Shirazi began.

She first showed what happened when you simply cleaned the makeup sponge with water from the sink, along with some soap.

‘Let’s try water and soap, which has a lot of surfactants to help dissolve the makeup and clean it, and it doesn’t do a great job,’ she explained.

Surfactants are compounds that are used in cleaning ingredients to make it easier for grease to come off of various surfaces.

‘The makeup is still on there,’ the board-certified dermatologist pointed out after she cleansed the sponge using soap and water, showing the camera that it was still covered with excess makeup and grime.

‘So, let’s see, what is the secret sauce?’ she asked.

It turns out that all it takes to get a sparkling clean makeup sponge is a mix of hot water, dish soap and olive oil.

‘Hot water, that’s good, because it helps loosen up that debris and grime,’ the dermatologist said, ‘We’re going to add soap for the surfactants.’

In the clip, Dr. Shirazi said that water and soap together just didn’t do the trick

When cleaned with water and soap, there is still makeup left on the sponge

The secret trick to getting a makeup sponge spotless was actually olive oil, the dermatologist claimed in the video posted to TikTok

‘Secret sauce, olive oil, because oil attracts oil,’ Dr. Shirazi continued.

‘It helps dissolve the sebum from the skin, oil and makeup, and that is what is going to remove and lift off that debris.’

In the clip, she mixed all three ingredients together in a bowl to later reveal a completely clean, unstained Beautyblender that almost looked as good as new.

‘It’s a winner!’ she exclaimed.

In the comments section of Dr. Shirazi’s video, many users chimed in to share the unique tricks they used to clean their own makeup sponges.

Some claimed that they cleaned theirs in the washing machine, which Dr. Shirazi confirmed was ‘another great method’ in the comments section.

‘I put them with my clothes and wash them in the washing machine,’ one person wrote.

Another seconded, ‘I throw mine in the washing machine.’

When olive oil is used to clean the Beautyblender, it comes out sparkling clean
